My neighbor loves wood. Almost more than me but his tastes are very
eclectic. Anyway, his house is a hodge podge of styles but it is tasteful.
Well, to add to the frenzy he asked (bugged) me to build him some doors
for his linen closet. I picked out the lumber (2 cherry boards) and he paid
for the material. He paid me for labor []
I was hoping he'd want a frame and panel system because I worried about
cupping. He opted for a slab door. Since he wanted grooves routed down
the length of the board, I ripped the board into 2" strips, jointed the mating
edges with a handplane and kept them in sequence so the grain looked
consistent. On the big door (19"x39"), the board had two "eyes" in it so it
actually looks a little bookmatched. He also bought a strip of inlay for one
edge of the doors.
The doors were put together a few weeks ago and are still flat. I'm crossing
my fingers that I won't have to use strongbacks. I did goof in routing one
groove on the big door. I hope it isn't too noticeable.
So cherry wood (my first time), thinned out/rubbed in BLO, several coats of
shellac, rubbed out, then waxed.
Thanks for reading,
Paul
