Well, almost anyway. I still need to apply some kind of finish to it and I am kind of leaning towards tung oil or lacquer at the moment. In any case what had happened is that the brass for the lever cap came in and I just could not stand it. So hack, hack, cough I called in sick and stayed home to work on the plane. I made the lever cap out of 3/8” thick by 2” wide piece of 12” brass. First I drew it on the computer then I used a ball mill to create the groove where the lever cap meets the cross rod. I drilled and threaded it for 1/4-20 and shaped it. I made the locking bolt out of 3/4” brass rod then threaded it, shaped it and knurled it. I then inlayed a piece of Red Heart into it. The blade that I bought was a Lie-Nielsen 3/8” block plane blade with bevel up so I had to completely grind the bevel off and start over grinding for a 25 degree bevel down. I was concerned that the blade may not be hardened where the new bevel was but no worries after 3 hours of sharpening I can assure you it is!
Sorry about the darkness in some pictures, since the brass refects so much I took the pictures without a flash. I am going to retake them outside this weekend if the weather holds up. Anyway, on with the pics!
You know, I guess what is really important about this piece is it is a tool after all so I bet your saying, “but, does it work?”
You BETCHA!!!!!!
Thanks for having a look and what do you think for my first try at a plane? I am thinking about sending photos to FWW for the anual tool issue but I have not decided yet.
