    Christmas Gifts

I made these gifts for my sibblings this year. They are a combination clock and Galileo thermometer to hang on the wall. This project is the result of LOML and myself trying to come up with something for gifts. The wood is red oak, stained with red mahogany and a few thin coats of laquer spray. As a precaution we put a little ring at the tip of the thermometer to keep it from falling. The ring is a decorative loop used on lamp shades. The themometer is 11" long. I put keyholes on the backs for hanging. I made a total of 7 of them.

Please forgive the poor picture quality. I've owned this camera for a year and don't know how to use it yet. (The pictures don't do my work justice)

Now why would someone living on the San Anreas fault worry about that?

Great project. Your sibs will really enjoy them, I'm sure.

                        Hey!

That looks like a unique Clock, etc. Very NICE!

                        Questions:

How do you read the Thermometer?

Where do you get the Thermometers?

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

                        Thank you!

I bought my thermometers at Amazon.com. They are also available at Rite Aid. They come in different sizes. Mine are the 11" ones.

They are accurate within 2 degrees. The little tags that hang from the colored balls show the degrees (in increments of 4 degrees). The lowest ball at the top indicates the temp. If one of the balls is rising to mid point of the thermometer, the temp is between the ball at the top and the one rising. (example- 72 is the lowest ball at the top. 68 appears in the middle. The temperature is 70 degrees.) These range from 64 to 80 degrees. If all the balls are at the top, the temperature is 64 or below.

The thermometers come in different imcrements. The longer ones have more balls, more degree indicators. Hope this helps.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours as well.

It's a galileo Thermometer, named after the famous astronomer who discovered the principal that it works on, namely that water density is dependent upon temperature. Thus balls with finely graduated weight/volume ratio (tuned with the little metal tags) can indicate temperature. See the Wikipedia article below for more info and good pics:
