    Elevator bolts?

I stopped at an industrial hardware store yesterday and stumbled on a bolt that was new to me.

In picked up some 1/4-20 bolts 1 1/2" long (they had 5/16", also). The head is about 1" in diameter.

I ground the head to fit in the slot on my rip fence to secure a sacrificial fence. Worked great! And only 26 cents each!

I used to sell bolts for a living, and a running joke for a new employee was to try to get them to sell these bolts to our customers that maintain people moving elevators. The bolts are designed for use in a grain or similar type elevator.

Did you ever sell carriage bolts to carriage owners or did farmers buy plow bolts? Were you ever successful with sex bolts?

. . . a crossbow bolt must be for fastening a bow crosswise, and a hex bolt is for witches. And of course, Usain Bolt is a miracle on two legs.

Thats news to me, I use to work in a hardware store where they specialized in bolts and hardware, we called them Elevator bolts also, as in elevateing an object is the way I understood it, or leveling feet.

The fact sheet on the bolts states, "Extensively tested and used in USA grain industry."

I started to grind down elevator bolts for use in my fence, too. However, I didn't because the head is slightly conical inside, so I was afraid that it would warp the track in the fence. Looks like my concern was unfounded.

FYI, I use Ryobi Tee nuts for the wide slots and ground-down carriage bolts or toilet bowl bolts for the narrow slots.

I'll have to ask a farmer, there should be a few up here in this part of the country. But they will probably give me some German name for it. LOL

They are called elevator bolts because they are used to hold the buckets onto the belt in a bucket elevator.

Plow bolts bring back memories for me too! But then again so do bucket bolts.
