A Sad Day

Well, after 6+ plus years of hard work my 3100 motor burned out today. I was a bit surprised but had a feeling something was coming. It twice bogged down and stopped dead while trying to cut some 6/4 oak at a VERY slow rate and then just died on a simple cut later. I am very pleased with the performance though, I used it on most weekends during that time and pushed it hard. I have had my eye on the Rigid 3650 for a little while so I think now is the time to move up a bit. The best $300 I have spent to date on a tool, not to mention the priceless value of finding and becoming a member of this forum!

My condolences on your loss.

Was your blade dull? I ripped a number of lengths of 8/4 ash last year on my BT3000 (1996 vintage) and I don't recall having any feedrate problems or stalling motor issues. (I probably took it easy, given the thick wood).

Sorry to hear you lost a good friend. I've been having a bad feeling about mine too. But I don't have a reason to suspect anything.

If it didn't let the smoke out check the brushes they are the weak link in any universal motor and if you are pushing a bt3x00 hard check the brushes once per year and replace when they start showing wear. the rest of the motor doesn't just die.

Now I am NOT saying don't grab a cast iron topped saw, but if you can, fix that BT! Hey, two table saws are better than one right?

By all means check the brushes and try to bring that BT back to life.

Condolences, but on the bright side, it did give u great service. Will you consider something more robust than the ridgid, perhaps a hybrid or true cabinet saw since you work with thicker stock?

Thanks guys, you are funny I had the blade sharpened just 2 weeks ago so I don't think that was a factor. The idea to check the brushes is a good one, I will do that today maybe I will find a pleasant surprise. Based on my budget and the need to replace it quickly I think the TS3560 is the best move I can make right now.

If you don't smell smoke in the motor I would most definitely check those brushes as mentioned. This simply may be the excuse he is looking for to get that Ridgid? New shop.. new TS... give a man an inch and he'll take a mile.

And if you find that it only needs brushes.... get him into a Tool Addict 12 step program immediatley.
