Hi Dave. The saving grace on the tall splitter is that it normally shouldn't be used very often. On the splitter equipped saws, the medium splitter is likely used most often unless you cut thick stuff all the time.
My standard kerf splitters are a bit stronger, but not alot.
The problem with the Jet model you have and several others is that to keep with the saws design and to be able to use the OEM throat plate, I have to keep the mounting leg narrow like the front part of the OEM.
The Ryobi has twice as much meat at the mounting point than does the Jet.
Most of the RK equipped saws do have alot of meat at this point. This makes them quite a bit stronger even with the TK version.
The 4" port guards are heavier and if you have a saw like yours with the 4" port and especially with TK version, there will be some flex in the tall splitter.
I try to add meat below wherever I can in the initial design. I was able to do this with the Delta's, some Grizzly's, PM 66's and a few others.
I would love to be able to fit a big old RK on all the models I make, but unfortunately it would be a design nightmare and cost prohibitive.
Many guys do use the blast gate with the 4" port, but it's location isn't always convenient, especially if you just need to close it some for one particular cut. The design I am working on would not add much weight at all. All of this weight would also be right over the clamp where the guard is the most rigid.
I should be able to show an initial drawing of it this evening or tomorrow.
Basically it will be a shark tail fin similar to the tail hook with a bend. It will get 2 small screws and lock nuts and attach inside to a clear lexan plate. It won't fully close off the port, but it will shut about half way, which should be just enough to reduce suction so it doesn't pick up small parts.
