actually that would be good - the SMT can, and is supposed to be, adjusted to be parallel to the blade.

Using a pair of 1" C-clamps, a scrap of wood, and an 8" blade you can crosscut a 24" panel. Even if you could make a sled with larger capacity, I think it would be awkward and unwieldy to use, and probably less accurate.

I too wanted to build a sled where the rails just straddle the main saw body, but since I have one of the saws where the blade and saw body is not parallel I can't do that.

I've been fortunate to have two SMTs, but both developed an unacceptable amount of play , that I can't fix. So I thought why not use both together and I'm building a crosscut sled that will attach to both SMT fences, and move forward in line with the blade. I'm not done, and have my blade guard up, so the photo is not as it would be used on the saw.

In the second pic I have the two SMTs and the fences will just install the normal way, whith the sled fitting over them.

In the third pic is the bomber sled for 45 degree miters that I built a few years back and used many times with great success. It rides along the rip fence at 22", and if my crosscut sled on the two SMTs doesn't work (still sloppy) I will change that to the rip fence design too.

I have a bomber sled that rides on on the SMT. I just remove the mitre fence and drop the bomber sled into place.
