Router for the 21829

The suggestion to mount the router to a spare accessory table looks like the path to take in this case ... where I will likely need to collapse the workshop too frequently. I've used a few square feet of plywood spanning a couple of sawhorses as a router table. It was awkward to attach and remove the router from the plywood. The spare accessory table is an attractive approach.

I posted this elsewhere, but I think it is worth a repeat. I have a very nice and large router table, yet sometimes prefer the table on the 21829.

It is especially handy for routing dados that are more than a few inches from the edge. Most router tables can't handle this, but it works great on the BT3/21829 series.

A quick recomendation: Instead of messing with the 2-peice fence that comes with it, remove the two hunks of wood and reuse the brackets for a sacrificial fence. Just attach a piece of 3/4" MDF (or any flat board) to the two brackets and connect it to the rip-fence. Use moderate care when tightening so that you don't flex the fence. Slowly push it into the bit and viola, you have a custom made, zero clearance fence.

Of course, this lacks dust collection. The post that is intended for mounting the fairly useless bit-guard would work well for mounting a shop-vac or DC hose, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

Lum, I think that you would like the router table set-up better on the 21829
if you used a Dewalt 616 or 618 with the three base kit. Just mount the
fixed base under the router table and leave it there, and use the other bases,
the plunge and d-handle bases for the freehand work when needed. I used a
sears router ( older style) under the Bt3100 table and did not like the clamp
locking feature, it would open up during use and allow the router to change
it's adjustment( drop down). I eventually decided to build my own router
table cabinet and got away from the saw mounted one and I like it better.
