Router Mounting Kits (4950300 vs 4950301)

Although I'm not new the BT3Central Site, I'm a new "official" member and definitely new at posting. I have a BT3100 and a Bosch 1617 Router. I wanted to try mounting the router on the Accessory table and I realize that one of my options is to use the Ryobi Mounting kit.

I may be able to get my hands on a 4950300 Kit for a cheap price ... but I'm trying to figure out if I will have any problems using this on the BT3100. My understanding is that it was designed for the BT3000 ... so do I need to get the new Kit (4950301)? Or can I still use the old 4950300 on my BT3100?

On a related note, I heard the Router Fence on the Ryobi kit is really not that great (actually I heard it was junk) ... so I thought I would either buy one that fits the table or try to make my own fence as a project.

Has anyone done either? Bought a compatible fence or built your own? Can you recommend any good fences/Designs?

    Thanks

The fence in the router kit is junk. Don't waste your money on it. All you really need is the mounting plate.

You'd be better off to build a fence or purchase a better quality one and mount it to the rails. In the short term even a straight edge clamped to the table or rails would work for certain applications. As to the plate itself you can find them on ebay, sometimes in Sears, or make your own out of baltic birch, phenolic, or some other rigid materal.

Oh, I almost forgot: WELCOME to the forum.

If I remember correctly the pattern for the plate is in the FAQ.
Don't be stupid, the universe is watching.

One item from the router mounting kit that you should not overlook, is the rear rail clamp. The accessory table by itself does not provide a means to clamp to the rear rail, and will move in reference to a fence that does clamp to the rear rail.

You can make your own such clamp fairly easily if you choose not to buy the kit.

I recall that I purchased, and subsequently returned the router mounting kit when I first got my BT3000 about six years ago. (Boy, was that fence cheesy!) I overlooked the necessity of the rail clamp, but only for a couple cuts.

      Regards,
      Tom

The BT3000 and BT3100 rails systems are a little different in profile but literally every accessory fits both - they line up where it counts.

I suspect the main difference inthe BT3100/3000 accessories kit may be the wedge that's included with the BT3100 to make the wheels work with the angled legs of the BT3100 (the BT3000 had straight vertical legs).

I have my Bosch 1617evs mounted to a plate, sometimes. I rarely use the fence though.

You might read my BT3 FAQ for more information on routers and mountig and stuff/ You can find a permanent link in the first post under "getting started" topics here in the BT3Central forums.

Thanks for your help. I figured that the fence included in the kit would not really be that useful ... you can tell by looking at the picture.

How do you do it without a fence and ensure the material is taken by the bit evenly?

On the subject of Custom-made or bougth router fences for the BT3100, is there a fence that fits this table or a good design for a fence I can make myself that would fit the BT3100? What do people in this forum use?

          Thanks

I mostly use mine for bearing guided bits - no fence required. I have a full router table and since I got that the BT3 becomes a second or actually third table reserved for roundovers and rabbets, mostly.

There's been lots of router fences discussed and shown here, browse thru the tools, shops and getting started topics back as far as you can stand for router and fence topics.
