I got my shims from ORDERTREE.COM. I converted to the newer BT3100 spring shims, so I needed a replacement guide holder also. The part numbers I ordered were:
Part # 0181010110 - Guide holder BT3100 - 1each
Part # 0181010314 - Spring Shim - 2each
Part # 969600001 - Flat Shim - 2each
See Black Walnut's instructions on the process in my thread of yesterday.
Yes, I did...
...no hit in FAQ on "buy shims BT3000 BT3100"
...or "buy shims BT3000"
...or "buy shims"
...or "shims"
At which point I asked my question in the forum.
(I am quite sure I remember reading the answer somewhere)

Papa -
Thanks
I clicked on the BT3 FAQ search "binocular" icon. First hit was a note about BT3100 not having shim problem. Second hit (Find next) was the following:
Occasionally you will have the dreaded
shim problem (a BT3000/Sears 22811 quirk, this has been fixed in BT3100s). The shims are thin metal plates that ride between the motor holder and the saw frame when traveling vertically. They are normally held in place with the motor housing but can be deformed and fall out when the lubrication is not adequate. If you find some small metal plate below your saw body then the shim(s) have likely fallen out and will need to be replaced as they are the anti-wear mechanism. Vertical movement will become difficult. The shims are inexpensive but the labor can be a few hours. Keep your saw lubricated in this area with a dry lubricant. A February, 2005 survey on BT3Central indicated that 70% of BT3 owners never had the problem but that 30% had some problem with shims. The BT3100 does not have the shim problem because the shims, though used, have a mechanical retainer. You can convert the BT3000 to the BT3100 shim system. The conversion is simple if you will have the saw apart to replace the belts and the cost is negligible Parts List: #969600001 Flat shim [BT3000/BT3100}$.90 ea, 2 needed #0181010314 Spring shim {BT3100} $.86 ea, 2 needed #0181010110 Guide holder {BT3100} $15.07 ea, 1 needed #662329001 Dvive belt {BT3000/BT3100} $13.49 ea, 2 needed The parts are available from: www.ordertree.com www.billious.com
Holy Batman!
That's exactly what I wanted!
BUT...
I don't have a clue what you're talking about [sorry]...
What "binocular" icon? [I even searched the Control Panel to see if there was a "graphic" option I hadn't activated]
Did you enter any word(s) and do "search"? Or did the "binocular" produce other options?
Maybe I should change my signature to "Clueless"
Well, its confusing because there are several FAQs. Follow these directions exactly.
Don't go to the Forum FAQs, they just tell you how to use the forum software.
Do do this: navigate back to the forum Discussions
select the forum discussion "Getting Started"
In the first thread, its entitled something like "StickY: Official BT3Central FAQ & Acronyms"
Click that one. The first post contains the links. Click on them.
You will see Adobe Acrobat reader open if you have it, if not then you need to get this reader which most people have. The reader will display the FAQ and acronyms.
The easy way is to just scan the brief list of questions at the start of the document and click on the one nearest yours. There's one something about what is the shim problem and what do it do if I get it? Click on the question, it's hyperlinked to take you straight to the answer.
The other way is to use the Adobe Acrobat word Search function; click on the "Search" binoculars icon at the top of the reader.
This is a word search like in MS Word, not a document search like Google. Enter a single keyword like shim and it will find the first instance of "shim" in the FAQ. Skim the surrounding text to see if this answers your question. There's another icon, binocular with a circular arrow, this is "find next". Keep using it until you locate an applicable paragraph.
