yeah - I looked at LV for a few minutes this morning.

They still had the pair of skew block planes for sale ----

Almost pushed the button for the dovetail saw ---- then took a deep breath and said "Naah ---- never mind....."

OMG that is some serious damage. I must ask why the 4 and 4 1/2 they seem pretty close to each other.

            dram,
Thanks for waking us up with these Lee Valley planes. Dang they look good. A real piece of work. A real piece of machine work. Let us know how you like them! I'm still sticking by my Stanley's, but I may add a LV block plane when they come out next year to "assist" my Stanley #18. Merry Christmas

              Hey, that's 1/2 lb difference!!!

Well, knowing that this stuff would go fast when their cyber monday sale opened up, I was right there on their site at midnight (9pm pacific). I really thought there would only be one or two things of interest, but I was overwhelmed by the choices. My goal was to get a shoulder plane, but none was available. Then, I saw they had a #4 1/2 plane, so I added it to my cart and went to checkout. That's when it went bad. Their site went to a crawl and after several minutes, brought me to an empty cart. I figured they were out of that plane, so went back and found the #4...added it, checked out, but no luck. It went on like that for 1/2 hour.

I was about to give up, when they fixed the problem and it was full speed. I bought the #4, but then realized that the plane I wanted was the 4 1/2, so I bought that. THEN, I finally noticed they had the bevel-up smoothing plane and it was not sold out. So, that got bought.

What can I say? I was exhausted and very excited to finally get a really great smoothing plane..and it escalated from there.

What will I do? Not sure. Will have to wait until I get the planes in hand.

I love the Stanley's. I scored a #7 (dated to the 1920's) at an estate sale for $20 with a sweetheart iron. Owned by a woodworker, so kept in very good shape and it performs beautifully. Went crazy for awhile and ended up with a number of old stanley's 4, 5, 6, 7 (I NEED A #8!) and a few other brands too. The #4 belonged to my grandfather and I was going to restore it to be a smoothing plane, but when this sale came up I decided that I would get much, much better performance out of a LV modern smoother. I can't wait for it to get here!

Let us know which of the 3 smoothing planes you prefer. The #4 and #4 1/2 are bevel down, while the BUS (bevel up smoother) is obviously bevel up. I got the BUS.

LV had the shoulder plane the previous 2 cyber mondays. I got the medium shoulder plane last year.

don't let all the "sold out" stickers intimidate you - LV still has a few seconds.

Still a couple of #6 planes left --- pretty darn reasonable prices, too.

Still a few of the Veritas® Skew Block Planes pairs (in the more expensive metal)

Still some 4 1/2 smoothing planes left, too
