Of course you brought it up to their attention, because you wouldn't want to benefit from a mistake that a cashier made...would you?

I doubt the cashier made a mistake. Home Depot often marks things down to .01 when it's meant to be taken off the shelf. Often they will no longer carry a specific item and slash the price. If it doesn't sell they will mark it down some more. And so on until they decide to pull it off the shelf all together and mark it to .01. someone must have forgotten to take that item down.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

When I replaced our kitchen sink, we saw one on display at HD that we decided on. Went back about a week later and the display was missing. We were told that the sink was discontinued and even the display model was missing. According to the department manager (if that's what he was), when a manufacturer tells the store to pull an item, they can't even sell it at all...even as a mongrel. The sink went to the trash.

I've often heard it said that someone "got in his two cents worth" but toolguy only did half that.

That there is a heck of a deal!! I know you're not gloating, and this isn't the place to do so, but if you were and if it were permissable, i'd have to say...

It's not exactly gaming the system; but if you mute the scanner at the self-check aisle, you can find if the item will ring .01 From what I've read over the years, some cashiers/managers care and others are happy to sell the item for the price that rings up. I've never gotten anything that nice for a penny; but I've scanned clearance items to find an additional reduction was in the system but not on the sticker. Last bargain was Bemis toilet seats that rang up 75% off vs 50% shown on the sticker. Seven bucks each, IIRC.
