    Rare earth magnets - 100 for $18.40

Just got an email from Peachtree on this. What great timing for my tool cabinet build.

Peachtree shipping is $6.99 on purchase of up to $25, and $8.99 from $25 to $50. At least that is what i recall from yesterday--should be close!!

Be sure to keep them away from little kids, they might swallow them.

I got mine. Ok so what is the best way to install them? drill the correct diameter hole and glue them in place?

You could do that. I would use quick setting epoxy personally. Peachtree also sells a cup that has a small countersink where a screw would hold it in the hole you drill. Take a look at the page, below where the magnets are listed. You should only need one magnet on an average size door, the other end could be a countersunk screw or small washer, etc.

i have some neodymium magnets and I was unable to get them glued satisfactorily with hot melt glue. I set them maybe 1/16 or 1/32 below the surface of the wood, countersunk, and glued them in with hot melt glue. After cooling off I tried my wood faces on my vices and the magnets pulled right out of the glue.

Later I used some E6000 adhesive applied to sandpaper-scuffer magnets and it has seemed to hold. Relevant discussions:

I don't want to hijack the thread, but a good (free) source of rare earth magnets is from worn out Sonicare toothbrush heads. With a rectangular shape, in some cases they might be preferable to round magnets. They're fastened to the head with a plastic weld through a center hole- Xacto blade trims off pretty easily.

I don't know about other brands, but IIRC our Sonicares with the standard head have one magnet- it looks like two bars, but there's a thinner part at the bottom connecting the two- like a dado. There's a hole in the center of the "dado", through which it's attached to the plastic.
