If you can get in on the "deal" the better cord to get is by Prime thats lighted/locking. The advertised Craftsman cord may be tough to get since Craftsman branded cords are a rarity these days. The "deal" has ranged from 19.17 to 45+ depending upon website updates or inventory changes or region. Some folks have been getting cords by CCi that are not lighted/locking.Comment

FWIW, I calculate the value of the 3 lbs of copper in a 50-ft 12/3 extension cord to be around $12 at wholesale prices (London Minerals Exchange May 2011) Probably higher now.
THere's $10.50 left if the sale price is $22.50. Dividing it into three operations:
for the first $3.50 someone ships the copper to the wire factory, then draws the copper ingots into 19 strands of 25 ga. wire, then twists the 19 fine 25 ga. strands into a larger bundle (12 ga.), shoots (injection molded) three colored insulations around three separate wires to three separate spools. THen spools the three insulated wires plus rope fillers into a large bundle which is then overshot with a large heavy PVC jacket onto a 4th spool.
So now we have the base cable... for what another $3.50 someone has to cut it into 50-ft length, strip and prep the ends, solder them to recptacle and plg contacts, place them into a large, expensive injection molding machine along with the LEDs and locking mechanism, then inject at high pressure thermoplastic PVC to form the plugs.
FInally with the remaining $3.50 someone has to test it, wind it up, and then stick some kind of cardboard sleeve over it, and then put it on a boat and ship it to the sears warehouse in America. Then ship it to a store near you.
I don't see how they can do it. Maybe they skip the testing...
Shoot, it's in my local store for $13.05...Last edited by LCHIEN; 06-16-2012, 04:25 PM.Loring in Katy, TX USA

I think they were substituting a different brand/ model cord at my Sears... The one I got had a different locking mechanism, and no lighted end. I'll keep it, but I'll miss the LED, as that's a really helpful feature.Comment
