Looks to me like a "poor man's" socket set that my dad had about 50 years ago-

basically, an allen wrench (~3/8 - 1/2", IIRC), and the sockets had hexagonal recesses to fit on the allen wrench. Obviously, no ratchet availability.

I think the spare sockets are slid onto the handle end of the allen wrench.

agree with JDON, too. Definately a compact socket set on a 1/4" or 3/8" allen wrench with retaining balls to hold one of the sockets in position. Use the short end for making more torque, the long end for quick spinning on or off nuts.

jadon is correct. My dad passed his on to me in the late 60's. After I purchased a ratchet and socket set it went somewhere and I don't miss it. No ratchet feature, to short for leverage and limited assortment of sizes. Other than the numerous drawbacks it it had nothing going for it.

Us lefties know that everything left-handed costs more. I priced a left-handed bolt-action .30/06 once. I'm still saving for it.

Your right I have a bunch of Dohickeys in my shop thanks to BT3 Central, they cost a lot more than the Thingamajigs I bought years ago.

I used to have a really expensive Whatsit. I loaned it to a "friend" and never got it back.

On a slightly related note, I taught my Belgian foreign exchange student to use "thingamabob" when she doesn't know the name for something.
