Just noticed the Hitachi 4" Belt/ 8" Disc Sander has been marked down at Lowes from $179 to $99. Don't know much about it but thought someone might be interested.

I have that sander and love it. It's a great deal at $139. I paid about $79 as did a lot of folks around here about 2-3 years ago from an Amazon deal...
At the time, because I already owned the Ridgid OSS sander, I wasn't sure what place in my shop the Hitachi would take - it seemed to be more of the same in terms of capability with the Ridgid.
But - after having it for a few years, I'd say get it. It's way more powerful in terms of hogging off wood with the belt portion than the Ridgid. The Ridgid can be stalled easily, not so with the Hitachi.
Also - the Ridgid belt portion is hard to use with smaller stuff cause it goes so fast, it'll rip the parts right out of your hand and on to the floor. Because the Hitachi has the table and the stop at the bottom, it's much easier to do some rough sanding on small items and still have control.
And - even without a dust collector, the Hitachi with it's dust bag catches an amazing amount of the sawdust. It has very good dust collection for one of these units.
I use the 8" disc portion for squaring off stock and fine beveling of edges on smaller stuff.
It only has one table - so I keep the one table on the disc portion and use the built-in plastic dust hole ledge for support on the belt section.
Nice unit for the money at $50-100.
For $50, I'd buy another just for a second cast iron table and sell the unit for the balance...
I should have jumped on it earlier. There wasn't one at my local lowes today and there is a cheapish looking Skill on the shelves where the Hitachis used to be. I couldn't find it listed on the Lowes website at all either.
Went to our Local Lowe's and after having them look for 1 hour they finally found the last one...other than the floor model which was missing parts. For some reason they are no longer going to carry it. I said something to this affect and they were dumb founded I would know that and they had not been told...then they looked on their computer and saw there not being reordered.
Thanks for the heads up on this good purchase. Was going to get a larger floor model, but after building a nice stand it will work just fine on the scrolled bowls I am making. Makes sanding allot faster.
Can you give me a little insight on your approach for talking them down to $50 ? I'd definitely buy one for $50. Good job!
To get the best deal, talk directly to the store manager. Also the best way to barter is to take the last one or two they have so they can get the items out of inventory. Typically, you can get the best deals on a busy weekend. I was told by a store manager that it is all marketing from their standpoint. They can justify the loss better on a large sale day (ie. Sat. or Sun.) But...I have gotten great deals through the week also.
Don't be afraid to shoot them a rediculous offer. Some managers will offer 10% off only. If that happens try another day when a different store manager is on duty & try again. Good luck!
Icemans right about how to get the deal,Also helps if you have a receipt from someone else who has purchased it at that lower price, but not necessary. Hit em on the weekend when their busy and confused sometimes works as well but the less they have of a unit the more likely they are to deal. Out of state receipts rarely work but if necessary I,ll look around to see if I can find mine and post here,Tommy(a leg down on the rest)
Another vote for this deal if you can find it. I also got the $79 Amazon deal a few years ago, zero problems, easy to adjust, works like a charm.
Ditto here on the Amazon deal several years ago.. Heck of a machine for the price! If you find one get it, you won't regret it. Never had a problem with it.
Kind regards,
Chris

I purchased the machine when it originally came out. Two reasons.. I ran my Ryobi to death and I liked the cast iron table. I have run mine a lot and I have had two problems in the recent 6 months. Before I state them the machine is a hog and the dust collection is excellent.
Most cheap sanders have tables that are very small and won't stay in place when tightened. This one has a cast iron table and it looked healthy to me when I purchased it. Just recently the tightening bolt that holds the cast iron table stripped on me. And the tension adjusting nut would move slightly when running causing the belt to change track.
The tension adjust was a quick fix with a piece to duct tape to keep it in place when adjusted. No big deal. But.. I have never liked tables on any cheaper sander I have seen and even carries over to some higher $ machines. So.. after my bolt stripped I decided to fix that problem also with not only one that stays 90 degrees (I never use a sander to do angles so tilt is a non issue with me) and has a larger table.
Just a quick fix for me in both cases as I do like the machine better than any other cheap sander on the market. Good luck getting one for those in need!
Do you mean this one, If so I would try to talk them down as I purchased the last 2 at a store here in Ga. for $50 a piece.
It's probably not that exact sander that you purchased. When I bought mine, think it's great BTW, the current model number was SB10Yl. I think the ones you bought were an earlier version. They probably had some minor issues with that one and made some changes.
