Where are you seeing reconditioned? I'm only seeing 'discontinued?

It will be different from location to location. They may not be selling it in your area for some reason.

That's about 3 miles from where i work. But
i just checked; the hardware guy at the Humble mall says that the recon unit they had has already been purchased.

If anyone ends up buying one I suggest you keep it as clean as Rod keeps his shop. It's a great machine but, unlike my other power tools, it needs to cleaned after every use. Good luck to everyone on finding a deal.

No, I'm using the link that was supplied, just that it says discontinued, not reconditioned, unless I'm somehow missing it?

                  How Sears "outlet" works

I got my 21829 (Bt3 clone) through the Sears Outlet. I waited mine out from $393 down to $287 and thus discovered how it all works. Essentially, when a store takes something back they assess whether to trash it or fix it or just put it back out. I believe the store can establish the designation e.g. "re-conditioned" or "discontinued." Or sometimes the "main office" will say something is discontinued and so they will put all their stoci in that out as such.

Here's what I know for sure. They all carry new warranties. The minute they post it it goes online through the outlet site (well as soon as it gets through the system/18 hours or so.) Each store can set their initial price but it looks like the initial price is around the very best sale price including discounts generally speaking. And then the computer automatically lowers the price by a set percentage (may be item/price specific) if it doesn't sell after a set period of time (e.g. two weeks/may be item specific or prices specific). My first price cut (21829) was from 393 to 354 after about 10 days. Then like 333 after about a week and then 317 after another five days or so. I got the Sears Friends and Family discount for the 287.

So, if you wait, you take your chances. As most of you noticed if you go look it can be gone but the website asks if you would like to see the nearest available one to "your" store. Tulsa OK looks like it has everything. I am sure the only reason that mine was still there though, was that they put it out prematurely before a part got there (they told me a few others had asked about it) and so they couldnt' sell it and the computer kept lowering the price. They actually finally pulled it from the outlet site as the part wasn't in (the stand/blade cover). I had thought it was gone when they pulled it and then got a call a week later as one of the salesman had kept my number and thus got my deal. It showed up again on the outlet site the morning after the call which just happened to be Friends and Family day and so my decision was made.

So, if you are looking at stuff on the outlet site, that's how it works. They also show "outlet" inventory for each store online and sometimes that is worth looking over. I have gotten some amazing deals off of the outlet site then picking up at the store or just perusing the clearance shelves. Much of it isn't a deal at all at first. But upon occasion it is like they are giving it away. I saw one of their 20 V lithium Ion drill sets with two batts, light, circ saw and drill for 139 about five months ago, but didn't need. Sale price on that is 199 best (Black Friday). One other deal I saw was last spring. It was one of those 800 buck yard vac mulcher limb eater things with the twirly front wheels (technical description) for 199. Didn't need.

I find it worth my time to keep an eye on this as a hobby...

                    Compucarve

I've been watching for a deal on a Compucarve and have seen several of the store display units for sale at about $600 but at least some of the displays have been non-functional models.

This Thursday I was traveling from VA to CT and searched the Sears Oulet site and scored a refurb unit for $399 in NJ. The unit was listed on the web at $599.99 on Wednesday but they reduced the price about an hour before I arrived at the store. The unit has clearly been reconditioned and included new belts, bits, and drive cable. The unit had the manual, software, memory card and interface, tools etc. I checked that it powered up in the store.

The store also had bits and other options on clearance at 75% off.
When I get back home I'll run a quick test piece to ensure all is well.

Nice Score. I think you'll really like it. Check out the CW forum. Tons of great ideas and information. Just make you clean it after every use. If you use compressed air, lower your settings and try to avoid spraying the censor directly. I usually, **LIGHTLY**, wipe the sensor with a tack cloth.

If you buy one, be prepared to send it back to Texas at your cost at least a couple of times.

Mine went back and forth 4 times. After the 4th time I sold it.

The machine is almost useful, however its repeatability sucks. It's really too bad as the software is nice and quite easy to learn.

                          Update

Just a quick update on my clearance Compucarve. I arrived back home yesterday and unloaded from the trip. Today I picked up some lube and lubed the flex cable as suggested in the forums. I loaded the software and tried to register and it failed because the serial number had been registered to another user. I prepared for a fight and called tech support. Within two minutes they reset the serial number and I was registered and ready to go.

I created a project with a 2x2 shell pattern and saved it to the card along with the latest software. I loaded a piece of poplar and 5 minutes later was holding the finished carving.

All in all I think I more than got my moneys worth at $399. The unit had clearly been repaired but not fully refurbished. It came with new bits and belts, and everything was included except the bit removal tool.

While searching for a Compucarve during my trip I noticed one in stock for $275 on Long Island and a few other units. So happy hunting if anybody else gets the urge.

                          YMMV

When you get a chance take a look at the rock chuck. It's supposed to be a much better better replacement and helps to greatly reduce vibration and friction. If I wasn't broke after finding so many bargains this month I probably would be ordering one.
