    Salvaged Redwood - $2/bf - Eugene, OR

BRING Recycling in Eugene has some decent redwood that was salvaged from the old bleachers at the Cuthbert Amphitheater. It is all 2x6 clear. Boards range from 8-12' with a smaller pile of shorter cutoffs @4'. The wood includes bolt holes and there is some end checking but it is pretty sound and they let you pick your boards. They won't deal on the price or let you cut out damaged portions but they give you a generous measure to make up for it. I found them to be pleasant to deal with and they will load your truck for you. I picked up 85 bf for garden furniture and raised beds and I think I'm going to go back for more. If you're in the area anyway, you could do a lot worse. When you're done, drive east a mile or so and check out Urban Lumber. It's a one-man shop that features a lot of salvaged and odds-and-ends wood at good prices that always makes the visit worthwhile for me.

    All the usual disclaimers.

Chuck, thanks for the info. I drive through Eugene every month or so. I'll have to map out where they are and take a look next time.

Now if your into donuts there is a great place just off of the Beltline. At about the corner where Jerry's is take the River Road exit and head south on the left is a small strip mall with a Joann's Fabric in it. On the north end of the strip is a great donut place. Have to get there by early afternoon or they are out of donuts but it's worth the stop.

Bill, I'm not sure what I'd do for a Klondike Bar but I know what I'd do for a good donut.

Not too bad I'd bet. That stuff dries up pretty good and comes off with a scraper.

I like the idea of reclaiming lumber for sure... And this is a good price for some pretty rare wood if it is true Sequoia.

I guess the big question is... How can you tell?

If you're on Franklin in the Glendale area and want to go south to pick up I-5 at the 31st St. ramps, you turn south at the river and you can immediately see a RR overpass. BRING is on the right just before the overpass.

I know right where that strip mall is. Behind it is the VA medical clinic that I use. I didn't know about the donut joint, though. How could I have missed that? I'll definitely bring home a bag the next time I'm close or I go to Jerry's.

For those unfortunates who don't live in the southern Willamette Valley, Jerry's is the world's best hardware/home center store. Locally owned and only two stores. If you come for the wood, visit Jerry's too. Jerry's gets a LOT of my money and that's fine. They act like they want to be worthy of it. Since they price-match with anyone, anywhere (including Amazon, Toolcenter, anyone) there isn't much need to visit the borgs.

Enjoy, and treat yourself to Urban Lumber, too.

Thanks for the directions, I found the card for the donut place. Cal's Donuts, 2091 River Road, corner of River Road and River Avenue. 541-461-3838. I was told that if you call in the morning they will put aside a box of donuts for you. I have not yet tried this but plan to on my next trip up there. The donuts are of the Dunkin Donut variety.

Jerry's is the only home improvement place that I have been into that the staff is both knowledgeable and helpful. I hadn't realized that they would match Amazon prices, I'll have to go better prepared next time. Too bad it's such a drive for me, it's about 4.5 hours from Brookings - forever if you get stuck behind someone.

I am going to have to explore Eugene more. I would like to find a hardwood plywood place with decent prices and stock that is open on Saturday. And if the place were next to a quilt store I would be in heaven

Can't help you with a quilt place, although I'm told that there are such in Eugene. One of my neighbors is a big quilter.

As for hardwood ply with decent prices, I have two suggestions. When you come off Beltline to go to Eugene (as opposed to Springfield) Jerry's, turn right (south) on 99 instead of left. Go under the Beltline overpass and you'll see Mike's Bargain Bin on the right. Much of his stuff is ordinary but he carries premium Baltic birch (and some other plys that I haven't tried) in all the common sizes and his prices are real good. I haven't found much premium BB at Jerry's. Mike's also has good mdf but so does Jerry's. The owner has a mill in Corvallis and he mills lots of flooring and he sells his extras and overruns in this store and a bigger one in Corvallis. That means his inventory varies a lot depending on what he has milled recently. Unfortunately, with construction in the dumps these days, his inventory is less than it has been. He has had some of the best tigerwood boards I've been able to find but it is hit-and-miss depending on what his mill is doing.

Across the street (Hwy 99) from Mike's is a place called something like Salvage Barn or something like that. He picks up lots of mill overruns and excess purchases, stuff like that. I just bought a piece of 5/4 mdf with a great melamine surface to use for a router table top and I think it cost me $3. I'd have paid $30, no questions asked. It's not a fancy place. They don't even have (or answer) a phone but they're decent folks who sometimes have very useful inventory for a hobbyist or remodeler.

BRING and Mike's are both open on Saturdays, I don't remember whether Salvage Barn is or not but I think so.

BTW, Jerry's wants you to bring in a printout if you want them to match an internet price. I've done that 2-3 times and they have matched every time. Once the tool manager told me "Wow, we pay more than that for this." As you know, it is a great place to shop.

Wait, two more suggestions. The first is Tree Products. When you go north to Eugene Jerry's on 99, go past it to the first light and turn right. I think it's Industrial but don't hold me to that. There are some warehouses on the right and the last one before the next light (I think) is Tree Products. They have some good ply and domestic and exotic hardwoods. When they're doing a lot of milling they have a great cut-offs bin at $1/stick. I've gotten some outstanding cherry there for things like cribbage boards and boxes for a buck a piece. They're open Saturdays until 2, I think.

A place with even more plywood choices, probably the best in the area, and as much hardwood selection is CrossCut Lumber. Not open on Saturdays, though. It's easy to find, a little bit west of 99 closer to town but I can't recall the exact directions right now.

dbhost, I don't know how to prove this is genuine redwood. I take their word for it. They have a 3' piece all cleaned up and planed in their office and it looks like beautiful clear redwood to me and the end cuts all look like redwood, not cedar, and I'm confident enough to buy it. I don't think you can go too far wrong with this deal.
