        Grit spec on the wheel?

Does anyone know the spec on the grit for the wheel? Neither HF web site nor the PDF manual gives any figure.

Rich,I believe that there is also a review of this unit in the Review section. You might try a PM to that person or someone in the thread provided and ask them. I'd like to know too. Post back if/when you find out - I'd do it myself if I wasn't up to my armpits in projects.

              HF Sharpener Questions

Not in the shop, and I don't remember the exact grit. It is more course than the Tormek - I do remember that. It also runs a little faster at 120 rpm.

I picked one up last year - paid $75.00 with discounts. Base machine is terrific. The jigs, however, leave a little to be desired. I ended up investing in a number of Tormek jigs.

When you take out the HF from teh box, check teh 90 degree bend on the tool support - seems all are out of tolerance. Adjust (bend) that first. I would then recommend you purchase the Tormek stone "truing" tool. This tool rides on teh jig arm, and has a diamond tip to true up the stone. BIGGGGGGG difference. All (even the $700.00 Tormek) generally have out of round wheels from the box.

Once you true surface, it spins nice and smooth.

***** TIP: Here is a link for the Tormek AU site - you can download a copy of the Tormek jig operations manual. It shows each jig, and how it's used.

              http://www.tormekshop.com.au/webcontent7.htm

Manual is a big pdf - right click mouse, and select save target.

Some jigs use the wheel going towards you, and some away. Pay attention as you can easily take a nice gouge from the wheel if you are not careful.

When you first use the leather strop, buy a bottle of mineral oil from the Drugstore. Use your finger to rub on and soak the leather. This conditions really nice.

For me, I don't use enough to make a Tormek worth while right now. The HF was an exceptional deal, and left me a few bucks to buy better jigs. A few of the supplied jigs are workable, however, and will get you started.

I also bought the extended warranty from HF as the girl said it was 100% replacement - even if the stone was a little worn down.

My first experience was with an old pocket knife I dug out of the drawer. After about eight minutes of getting used to machine, and sharpening, I proceeded to cut my finger - it was #$%!@ sharp!!

I'll check the exact grit on teh wheel, and post if I remember this weekend. The wheel on my unit was made in Germany, and is the exact one that comes on the Sheppach Tiger unit.

                Gary,
Thanks for the heads-up on the jig attachments. I picked up the Sheppach unit when it was on sale on amazon for about $105, but I haven't used it yet. So when I saw this post, I thought "wow, it would be great if HF also had jigs for this thing". Sounds like they are of poorer quality and should be avoided.

Thanks again and thanks to the OP.

                  Wheel grit

Could not find the machine it Tool Reviews.

Since I've read somewhere that the wheel is the same as the German machine, did some further searching and it appears there is a "wheel grader" that switches the effective grit from "coarser" to "finer" and back.

Probably only an issue with chisels and hand planes and since I'm mainly interested in turning tools and it seems the supplied wheel would work fine. If anyone can confirm this it would be good to know.

On one hand, on my local CL there is an old Craftsman tube lathe with an assortment of chisels and tool rests (which I think I can adapt to my old Delta/Rockwell 14/11). Asking price is $85 and I could probably get it for a bit less.

On the other hand, after watching Raffan's video it seems a wet grinder is highly recommended for skews and this HF machine should do nicely.

Unfortunately, the tool budget won't accommodate both.

Maybe I grab the CL deal now and wait for the grinder to come up on sale after a few months?

Someone please clarify for me. Is this an in-store sale item only? I'm gathering that it is from what I'm seeing on the coupon but sometimes it's a two way kinda thing. With our HF being an hour away it's unlikely that I'll make this if it's in-store only.

                    TIA
                    Blessings,

The coupon says "offer good for in-store purchases only". Sorry.

I have had mine for over a year now. I haven't used it much, but, I have no complaints. Some of the attachments are still not available. You have to true the wheel before your first use.

I recieved an email coupon which shows the sale has been extended through Nov 10th. I picked up one of these today. Haven't had time to open up the box to inspect it.

Also here is link to the Schleppach Tiger 2000 which has good photos of the available jigs. It's on sale for $109.00

Jet vs Tormek comparison - wheel grit

                              Couple of items:

                              1. There is another coupon out with the sale price good thru the 15th.

                              2. Got my unit yesterday. Still playing with it but so far no horror story.

                              3. Found a good article (with video) comparing the Jet and Tormek. In that story, both the Jet and Tormek approximate 220 grit for coarse and 800-1400 (Jet) or 1000 (Tormek) on the fine. My guess is if you pick up the respective grader you would wind up with similar results on the HF unit.
