I have never used a Skil router, they seem to be a bit cumbersome to me.
However, Amazon seems to use very inflated prices to base the savings on. Lowes has a 2 1/2hp Skil two base router with 1/4 and 1/2 inch capacity for 90 dollars I think.
Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things

You could buy a Skil router, or for $59.00 go to www.reconditionedsales.com and pick up a Hitachi M12VC 2-1/2HP fixed base router and end up with a much nicer router for less money. No plunge, sure, but if you put your money aside, you could go to Amazon.com and pick up the Hitachi KM12VC 2-1/2 HP fixed / plunge base router kit...

Not that the Skil is a bad router, but I have checked them out in store at Lowes, and they are a bit, clunky, I guess is the word... The plunge mechanisms are rough, and all the weight is on top making them rather unbalanced... Maybe a decent router to do the job on the cheap though... I have plenty of other Skil tools that do the job they do well. The router might just be that way as well. I hear good reports from owners with the 1825 fixed / plunge base kit....

I bought this package (1825, $89.97 at Lowes) originally to mount the fixed base on my accessory table, and use plunge base for everything else. Nice slow start, good power, but a TANK - heavy, bulky, and the plunge base is not very smooth. Mine required initial adjustments: I had to adjust the set-screws on the base-clamps used to hold the base to the router motor, because fresh out of the box, these wouldn't clamp tight, and the motor body would move slightly in the bases. However, adjustment corrected it, and they're solid. Also, my baseplate for template bushings fits perfectly, and it is serviceable. For a better bargain model with nicer handling, I'd go after this CM set (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...inate+Trimmers) - $119.99 regular price, but if you only want the fixed base, I have this one in my new router table and like it (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...inate+Trimmers) - $84.99 on sale right now.
