I really like this magazine and built my workbench according to their plans. But the ads in it drive me crazy. Nothing to do with woodworking -- mostly medications and viagra type stuff. I finally stopped renewing my subscription just because of that.

Ads? Magazines have ads? I must have learned how to filter them out a few years back.

I was surprised to find, in my earlier life as a publishing systems manager at a magazine, to find that about 2/3 of most magazine space is occupied by ads. Any more than that and they don't qualify for cheap 2nd class postage.

Wood Magazine has them and I don't mind a bit. They're on topic. But Handyman is like looking at Southern Living........too many ads / crap in there and to me it outweighs the good.

        Just an opinion !

My parents bought me a subscription to FH when we bought our first house. It served it's purpose and I got quite a lot out of it.

I don't remember noticing the Viagra ads.

I finally cancelled after about 4 years because it seemed to be the same projects getting recycled over and over. After seeing the fifth article on building a patio and retaining wall, I figured I'd read all they have to offer.

Still, I consider it a decent mag, especially for a first-time homeowner.

I agree with Mike above - I really got a lot out of it when I first subscribed and the detail was great for a new homeowner, but how many issues do I need on garage storage or building a shed? I still get it, but I don't find it as useful as when I was starting out.

If that is the magazine I think it is, it was so thick with ads that it was hard to find the actual articles. I bought a copy or two on the newsstand, and said forget it...

They need to decide if they want advertising revenue, OR subscription revenue, because to get one you need to cut down on the other a little... And I am pretty sure my little subscription doesn't mean anything to them...

i bought a copy of this magazine at the newsstand sometime ago and i remember it being useful. mainly because it seemed to cover general handyman type problems and solutions.

is there any other handyman type mag that is more recommended by folks here?

ps: i happen to also like the workbench mag as well since that seems to also deal with not-just-woodworking type things.

I haven't check out the handyman mag. The Workbench one is ok, I've been getting it for a few years now. About the time I feel I should cancel my subscription there will be a couple good articles.

This thread cracks me up. Just goes to show how different people are, and that IS a good thing. But for me: I don't have much use for Handyman magazine. It's just never floated my boat, and like some have said: I feel it's lots of ads.
Now for me personally, Augusthome publishing prints my top three magazines. Shopnotes is my top and tied for second is Woodsmith and Workbench. They all seem to focus on different aspects of woodworking and home improvement.
I was organizing my mags in my den last night (yeah! I have a den!). Shopnotes and woodsmith fill two plastic file boxes, the kind hanging file folders hang in. And I filled 4 of those magazine holders, the kind you'd put on a bookshelf that keep them standing up, with my 12 years worth of Wood magazines. Now I've gotta organize the storage box of American Woodworkers.

Just so everybody thinks it through...

                          4 x $8.06 = $32.24

i.e. it is cheaper to buy 4 one year subscriptions.

That jab aside, I know what your trying to say but I doubt they're going to let you use the 1 year price for four consecutive years. Heck, I would do it for 20 years then.

My opinion this (Family Handyman) is the worst "woodworking / carpenter / fix 'er up / ??? " mag I have seen to date, although "This Old House" is a close 2nd. Def goes to show we all see things a bit different. If this one were free, I'd refuse. (!)
