I picked one up at Harbor Freight B&M for $17 last week on sale. Comes with 2 batteries and works great.

      Thats cool.
I didn't even know HF had the fractionals. I'll have to check that out instead.
      Thanks.

You know I didn't pick up on the difference before reading this but the fractional 6" at HF was in the June flyer for $17.99 on page 4 This price good until July 7
Would be helpful for us non-decimal minded.

I've had the HF fractional calipers for a few months now and I really like them. Very solid and smooth and accurate to boot.

          Well worth the $17.99 (I think I used a 15% off too).

I got an email from PeachTree and watched their demo video. The guy was showing how it also converter fractional to decimal. He set the caliper to 1/8" and then pressed a button and said, "see 1/8" equals .129 thousands." I sent an email to them explaining that a .004" error is not acceptable in all circumstantces. They were very nice and responded quickly with an email saying they would look into it. I suspect the demo guy moved the caliper slightly during the demo.

He moved the calipers until they read 1/8".
IN all actuality it was a hair more, .129.
But the nearest fraction was 1/8 so the calipers rounded it off.
Because 9/64 would have been .125 Plus .0162 or about .141" 1/8 is the closest fractional equivalent. Since the calipers ony go to 1/64th resolution in fractions.
When he switched to decimal it was closest to .129.

It might have actually been .129045" but you know, the caliper only has a resolution of .001 in decimal mode.

technically he was not wrong (because he did not put the caliper at exacty 1/8") but it would have been better to say that the reading for the jaw opening was .129 to which 1/8" was the closest fraction. Or, maybe he was stupid an thought 1/8" was .129 because it told him so.

There a fine difference between converting readings which he was thinking it would do, and displaying the nearest rounded reading in the chosen display system.
