    Hitachi SB10Y Belt/Disc Sander

I'm not sure if this is a new price or not but I just noticed that Amazon has the SB10Y listed for $88.23. It's not as good a deal as the $79 price back in November but still a good deal IMO and well worth the price.

I bought one back in November and no complaints to this point.

According to Amazon Price Watch, that price has been coming down almost daily from a high of $149 a month ago. Very weird-looking price graph for an Amazon item. Might pay to watch it for a few more days, as the trend has not slowed at all.

I concur, it is a quality tool. I've used it a lot with no complaints at all, and I LOVE to complain :-)!
For some reason they've never pushed this tool in marketing so I think sales of it are probably pretty low, I wouldn't be surprised if they cut the line. Even if they do, I believe they are required to carry replacement parts for 5 years, by which time you will have gotten more than your moneys worth out of this puppy!
If anyone has any definitive info on that 5 year thing, I'd be interested to know. I seem to recall reading it somewhere but can't put my finger on it at the moment.

I am waiting to do a follow up on the review. Mine had two problems that I was just notified have been repaired - presumably under warranty. One of the brackets for the table cracked under a very reasonable amount of pressure. It then also appeared to have a capacitor failure as the belt would turn very slowly while the motor whined.

I WAS pleased to find that there were several authorized repair centers nearby (one within 2 miles in a town of 50,000) so that I didn't have to ship the thing somewhere for repair.

Assuming the repairs are under warranty, I will still be very pleased with this purchase. I'll update further once I get it back.

Outstanding price. I paid $40 more for this one at Lowes in Jan 08.

Well, I just paid $30 to get mine back. Don't know how I feel about it yet. The manager at the repair shop told me he didn't bother trying to submit the bracket as a warranty repair because he knew Hitachi would deny it.

The bracket that is now on there looks substantially beefier than the original.

I am going to digest it a day or two before commenting further.

Wow. They have obviously upgraded the repair part to a more substantial piece, but no warranty? I suppose that means that a recall is out of the question. Could be very bad PR on their part. If I were you, I'd contact Hitachi directly for an explanation. That may get you some relief. I hope mine holds up (so far, so good).

Of course it wasn't covered by the warranty because the repair shop didn't bother submitting it as a warranty repair. I wouldn't have accepted their lame excuse that Hitachi would have denied it as a reason for not submitting it. Personally, I think you have a legitimate gripe with the repair shop and not necessarily a gripe with Hitachi. How can Hitachi be held at fault when they didn't even get the chance to be a bad guy in this situation.

I see the price has dropped further and is down to $83.82 now.

That is exactly what I am processing. The guy knocked $10 off the original bill and after arguing for about 5 minutes, I decided I'd rather pay $30 to have the tool back than keep arguing and have to wait.

Hitachi can be faulted for the way the part broke - it was either a defect on manufacture or design. Hitachi deserves credit for having so many locally available authorized repair shops.

Who to blame for my having to pay $30 for the repair is the murky part.

My advice would be to watch that part carefully and should you need to bring it in for service, make it clear up front that you expect them to perform only those repairs that are covered by the warranty.

Down again to $79.63. Just can't help, ordered one. If the price drop again, I may just call Amazon and get the credit back. Not bad consider lowes currently has this on sale for $129.

All you know is the shop TOLD you the warranty repair would be turned down. You don't know if the shop submitted the claim or not.

I'll just say that in this area, it would be very unusual for a well established shop like this one to engage in systematic corruption of that sort. That isn't to say it is impossible, but even a whiff of that sort of dealing would put a shop out of business immediately.

I have lived all over the country (including Philly) and realize that this is common in other places, but here in Holland, MI - the Dutch Mafia still rules by their own (mostly beneficial) terms. This business has been here for over 50 years.

It was also my gut feeling at the time that the manager was being straight up with me. I have been self-employed for over 5 years and have developed a pretty good ability to read people.
