Note: This Delta planer lacks a cutterhead lock mechanism, which results in increased snipe. I consider that to be a significant drawback of this entry-level model.

The better Delta TP400LS, or the top of the portable planer line, the Delta 22-580 both of which do have a cutterhead lock, will reduce objectionable snipe quite a bit.

This is a good price for a reliable small planer. I agree that this planer has some "snipe". I have run many, many bd ft through this model planer and to reduce snipe I usually just abut ends of boards so they are touching on the way through the planer, so the planer "thinks" it is all just one long board. On the other hand, I mill all my lumber from rough stock and I usually (almost always) cut off the last two inches of each board to eliminate checking from drying, etc.
