HF not accepting 10% coupon from web

yesterday, HF did not accept my 10% entire order coupon. This is the one in which you have to fill out your information. I got mine through the link in an earlier post, it is also found on a slickdeals page:

they said that the coupon was a third party and the manager said that they would not accept it since it wouldn't scan the bar code.

I guess this reinforces the comments in the 30% coupon thread in that HF is tightening down on the discounts.

This was at the Saddle Brook NJ HF

Last week my HF took the 10% coupon that was linked here towards a $160 DP, and it scanned. 10% isn't asking much IMO ...I hope you (politely) left the item on their counter so as not to encourage them to refuse future 10% discounts.
Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

It does seem like they are clamping down on the coupons, but I found that the degree of acceptance or rejection is dependent on individual stores and managers. I get back to the States once a year for a month and visit HF stores in Memphis, Little Rock, as well as TX and MS areas. When I go visit family and relatives for more than 2 days, HF generally gets on my schedule and I look for coupons. Some take them, some don't.

Ditto what Hank says. I think the size and clarity of the printout affects the register scan, but I have not yet had any problem with the managers overriding a coupon that won't scan. You just got a guy that woke up on the wrong side of the bed, I think.

I've always had success with the coupons in Augusta, GA and Dillion, SC. They don't even give it a second look.

They wouldn't take mine in Sacramento last Friday - it wouldn't scan and the manager started questioning me about where I got it. When I told him it was from the harbor freight site he said they don't have those kinds of coupons on their site and was pretty adamant about it.

I printed out the page I got it from (with the address of their web site at the top) and I plan to bring that in to discuss it with the guy. Not so much for the $5 I would have saved, but for the principle. I wasn't too happy that he implied I had some sort of forged coupon when I printed it from their site!

I was thinking the same thing....

I went back and looked at the site and saw that it was a promo for the "jonesboro" grand opening based on the address.

                    http://www.harborfreightusa.com/html..._Coupon_bk.jpg

I plan to go back with this information and show it to the manager and see what happens. I plan to bring my receipt and see if I can get credit for the items I purchased.

You're more forgiving than I am. I'd be going over his head.

To accuse a customer of lying as a result of his ignorance of his own company - as a store manager - is completely unacceptable, and I'd be talking to somebody at headquarters about that problem.

I got the same thing - a manager who gave me the whole spill of the coupon not scanning and therefore not taking the coupon. This is going to be a problem if we cannot use these coupons for big ticket items - I mean, who do these guys think they are - Lowes, HD?

The reason that there are numbers on the bottom of a UPC code is for when a barcode won't scan. This is very common and the scanning software take this into account and allows for manual entry of the numbers. When printing web coupons make sure to set your printer to it's high quality printing mode. But if you know your coupon came from a HF website and is legit insist they manually enter the numeric code for your discount. (having the website address helps also) If they refuse tell them you want to speak to their corporate manager. Insist they call and threaten with the BBB, FTC and local law enforcement. I hate it when businesses don't honor their advertizing and I'll never let them off the hook. They have a responsibilty to check it's accuracy before issuing it and honor it when presented.

I don't mind hearing it, but keep it to yourself if it stinks.

I was in the new HF that opened up near me last night. I did not try to use the coupon(the one I had had expired) but I asked about matching the pricing from their catalog - they told me no problem if they have it in stock they will sell it for the same price as in the catalog. They were very nice and friendly about it.
I did have the catalog with me to show them.

BTW I bought the HF trailer - the catalog had it on sale for $239.
