    Not that great a deal

When I saw this thread I immeditely went to my local Kmart and bought two without even reading the comments. Now I wish I had taken the time. Unlike other rolling cabinets I've bought in the past, if you remove the molded plastic top tray (so you can set another drawer unit on top), there is no underlying metal top on the cabinet. The plastic top sits on the sheet metal edges of the back and sides, which have little structural support. The full extension slides seem rather poorly implemented, and I doubt the drawers will be able to withstand much in the way of heavy loads and/or occasional rough treatment without "derailing". Lastly, the units I bought were not in boxes (assembled by the staff?) and one of the plastic tops and it's mounting hardware actually seems like it belongs to a different model cabinet. I'll be taking the one with the incorrect top back for a refund. The other one is probably worth the $35 I spent, but no great deal, in my opinion.

I found 1 at the local Big K it had the 959304 number on the box, was marked as demo do not sell and was marked as clearance for $70. The manager claimed that it was a different item and gave me a hard time about it but gave in at the $35 price. When I got it home and unpacked I found the a new plexiglass features display stand inside it. No wonder they don't want the display units sold in the box.

maxparot, what new plexiglass feature? any pics?

you know what, today for the first time, i have realized that your user name is not 'maxport'! i cant believe myself for not noticing!

i just got back from sears and they price matched it and i ended up paying $30 with tax. but they would only give me one saying that the price is not correct, what ever that means?

now i just have to figure out a use. i was going to build the adjustable table that rod kirby has for assembly that was in the shop notes, but now i have to find a place in my small garage.

          thanks for the post burrellski!

It's just a plexiglass holder for the advertizing that they sit on top of the thing in the store. It isn't meant to be sold.

I got shut out at the Parsippany, NJ, Sears Essentials. Talked to two managers, had a copy of the receipt posted, and they would NOT sell me the two they show in stock there. Claimed that the one sold must have been a damaged item. I asked them to scan the item, it shows up as $139. Anyone with better negotiating skills, have at it! Nick.

                2 fer

I just picked up two at lunch. Perfect timing, as I'm in the (painful) process of converting an old 2 car garage into my new shop (finally getting out of the basement).

                Thanks!

I just picked up 2 from North Hollywood K-mart. There is one more and that would be the display. According to the tool guy there are 3 in Burbank store and 5 in Simi Valley store. He checked it out on the handheld scanner he had. I believe there are some in Carson also. He was amazed at how the scanner can check other store inventories, actually so was I. I didn't know it can do that.

                  Good luck.

Picked one up last night. Display at store said $98, rang up at $70, department manager agreed to sell it at $35.

I don't see it on their web site anymore, so I was probably pretty fortunate to get the $35 price. I was pretty frank, I told them the online price was the only reason I was interested in it. I made it clear that I would only buy it at the online price, but didn't really care if I didn't buy it. Your results with individuals may vary, but I think it's important to keep the discussion friendly.

It's not great quality but with some grease on the drawer slides it seems to work reasonably well. Well worth $35, not too bad a deal at $70, definately not worth list price of $138.

I went to the Santa Clarita, CA Sears Store armed with the forum results and although they were out of stock on this item they allowed me to order 2 of them at the $35 price and they accepted my Sears Card payment and gave me 10% off for using the card, how cool is that?

For those in the Baltimore region, save yourself a trip if headed out
to one by Pimlico, they have 1 display, but it is badly dented.

I scored the last 2 in Glen Burnie so that is also a dead end.

                                Yea,
every time I read here about those deals at Lowe's or HD I can count on checking CL locally here and finding a post from what looks to be always the same guy for the item at a big mark up. He was trying to get $50 for the rigid base and $165 for the hitachi BS. Seems like oportunism but for all the trouble and time he has to go through, its about the same return as scrounging for alumimum cans.
