What books do you recommend for a wordworking newbie? Have a SCMS and will be buying a table saw and router (maybe a few other tools if recommended highly with a small budget/workspace).
Also, here is a great search engine that searches prices on books- new and used.

I bought a book last month. I bought 2 copies. One I did not use. I tried to return it. They said that I cannot return books at all. So, your advice is YMMV.Comment

So, is this a good book for projects for furniture? I've only been at this for about 8-9 months and am ready to tackle my first SWMBO project: an end table. I'd like something that would give some good ideas for furniture with decent plans/instructions.Everyone's interests are different but FWIW, some titles I can heartily recommend from among those on sale:
...
Furniture - Great Designs From Fine Woodworking. All manner of projects, from simple to complex.
...
Most if not all of these have extensive reviews on amazon.com if you're unsure whether a title is quite right for you.

Bruce, as I recall this title has good photos and drawings of each piece, with the principal dimensions, but does not have a lot of detail on the joinery, nor any step-by-step instructions. It's more of a "this is what it looks like and here's how big it is; you figure out how to build it" book. Given your stated experience level, it's likely not quite what you're looking for.LarryComment

Absolutely correct. I would suggest buying a set of plans with full scale drawings of a simpler design period such as Shaker, A&C, Craftsman, Mission. I wouldn't suggest taking on a Queen Anne style project as a first!
Send me a private message or email and maybe I can help you find what you are looking for.Comment

I received my books today, and was somewhat surprised to see that all the books are softcover. Somehow missed checking that before - Amazon has the hardcover version of the router book by Hylton. Hardcover would have been nicer
.
Butch, from one beginner to another, i'd suggest books from the Taunton stable, like this one, and some others on that site. Some of their books are extremely detailed and step-by-step. And first of all, check your public library : you'd be surprised how many of these you might find there. So, is this a good book for projects for furniture?
