    help with book selection

I have been wanting to get a few books on various things, like the bandsaw, HVLP finishing, scroll saw, and a general cabinet making book.

So here is what i have in my cart, are these good titles or would any of you recommend a different book for the subject?

    The Complete Cabinetmaker's Reference Book

    The Bandsaw Book

Taunton’s Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing

    Scroll Saw Fundamentals Book

    Thanks for tips

Jesse, I can comment on only one of those: The Bandsaw Book, by Lonnie Bird, is okay but not great. If you don't already own a band saw it MIGHT be worth ten bucks, but be aware that it appears to be a compilation of article reprints and as such contains a lot of repetition. I own both it and Mark Duginske's classic The Band Saw Handbook, and the latter is far superior as a technical reference.

But even better, I would guess, is The New Complete Guide To The Band Saw, also by Duginske, which I understand to be a completely revised and updated version of his earlier book. I don't own this one yet, but it's on my wish list. This one is included in the Rockler sale and even though I'm making a blind recommendation, I'm pretty sure it'd be the one to get.

Two books below instead of Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing. The two books below will give you a college degree in finishing.

          http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=11436

I know Lonnie Birds The Bandsaw Book is a bible for some, but I had a chance to look at Mark Duginskes new book and find it superior in every way.

I assume you have a scroll saw or a strong interest in scrolling?

            Hey Jeff,

Actaully i just picked up a Delta scroll saw from Lowes on clearance for $41.00, (i think that is what is called a stealth gloat!!!!!) and thought the wife might like to try. I dont know that i have the patience to do it! I know it isnt gonna be as smooth as the dewalt, but hey, it was only 41.00 and came with the stand.

I also purchased a Fuji Q4 sprayer a few weeks ago when amazon had them marked at 590.00 for a few minutes, so i thought i would save some learning curve and get a book.

I am going to take Larry's and your advice and get the new book by Mark,

            thanks for the replys

Both Flexner and Jewitts books discuss HVLP spraying in depth. I don't like Flexners writing style (I know everything there is to know and dont mind telling you that writing style) but the information is great. Jewitts book is a "friendlier" book however it also contains meaty and substantial information. That is a good deal on a great HVLP. I have a high end Turbineair HVLP myself, but only used it a couple times as I am still trying to use up all the GF Arm-R-Seal I have. Caught a good deal and got 5 gallons of it! On my last gallon now! I have shot Reisthane (sp?) and really liked it.

Everyone's interests are different but FWIW, some titles I can heartily recommend from among those on sale:

Woodworking With The Router by Bill Hylton. No router owner should be without this one.

Furniture - Great Designs From Fine Woodworking. All manner of projects, from simple to complex.

Designing Furniture from the New Best Of Fine Woodworking series. A good primer on proportion, ergonomics, etc.

Classic Joints With Power Tools by Yeung Chan. Shows you how to do exactly what the title says, and is easily one of the top three woodworking books in my personal library.

                The Impractical Cabinetmaker
by James Krenov. Perhaps not quite as highbrow as some of Krenov's other works ... a little more about the nuts and bolts of woodworking ... but still more of an inspirational/motivational tome than a how-to guide.

The Workshop Book and The Workbench Book, both by Scott Landis.

The Complete Guide To Sharpening by Leonard Lee, of Lee Valley fame. This is THE bible on sharpening almost anything with an edge.

Setting Up Shop by Sandor Nagyszalanczy. And yes, I DID cut and paste his name. Be sure to get the newer version with the white cover, rather than the older one with a black cover.

Most if not all of these have extensive reviews on amazon.com if you're unsure whether a title is quite right for you.

You guys are a nuisance - now you have me placing an order too ! I have to ship it to my work address... .

But thanks for the effort to browse and list your recommendations; have been on the fence (!) for the hylton book for too long, and am tired of playing the 'hold' game in the local library , and also, am sure there's a bandsaw sometime in my future.

edit : Only caveat - the book by Nagyszalanczy is at $2.70 at Amazon Marketplace, making it $6.69 shipped, if anybody is okay with a used copy.

Are you sure it's ALL? The other day they had quite a selection, but NOWHERE close to all.

Edit, just went to their site, they do SAY all. I must have caught the pricing at the beginning. I think I am going to have to leave these forums for a while before I go broke, LOL.

She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Tell me about it. As a lifelong and utterly hopeless book junkie, I exercised remarkable restraint in ordering only five titles. It easily could have been three or four times that many.

I'm often disappointed with the woodworking books I get, so while perusing the Rockler books on sale, I opened up another window here: http://www.alibris.com/
I found several titles available used for half again the cost at Rockler. They were from the same re-seller for just a few dollars each...the shipping was the most expensive single item.

At about 1/4th the original retail price, my potential disappointment won't be so costly this time.
