Delta Professional 6" Jointer at Rockler

This weekend, Apr 21 and 22, Rockler stores are featuring 10% off all power tools. That makes the Delta X5 6" jointer $549 minus $55 minus $100 rebate from Delta equals $395 before tax (on $495). While this is not as good as the dead deal on Amazon last month, it is a good price. Reviews for this jointer look fairly positive, although perhaps it suffers from a relatively short table length of 46". Any comments on how this compares to prices on Grizzly, Yorkcraft, or other jointers for the "hobbyist" without a lot of space?

I can't comment on the other brands but I've had that machine for about two years and have been very happy with it. I consider it one of my most 'hassle-free' tools. My only regret, if you can really call it that, is that I didn't splurge on an 8" jointer. So, pretty good price on that one but if your shop space and budget allow one may get more of a long-term investment out of an 8".

TimInChicago, is it much of a hassle to change and reset the knives on the X5?

I have the 37-190 / JT-190 6" it works great. knives are not that hard to set-up.

I just put a set of the freud knives in mine. Way cheaper than the delta knives.

Might need some help on this one.

          1) My Rockler says they can't find the Delta 37-275X in their price book.

          2) Even if they could the 10% off is good on in-store power tools of which they have no Delta 37-275X's.

          Any info appreciated.

I've had the 37-195 since last November. I got a great deal on it and have nothing but good things to say about it. The rack and pinion fence is a little bit of a space hog, but it works great. I couldn't put it up against the wall in my layout anyway. Would definitely buy again.

Not sure how close this model is to the X5, but they look pretty similar.

              Mikel,
Which freud knives did you use?
              Thanks,

I think the knives are pretty easy to change on this compared to other set ups. This one does not have springs but instead has two levelers for each blade and I think it's a pretty good system. You don't need the magnetic setup jig etc. That said, it's all relative... changing blades on a jointer is never actually 'easy' compared to most things you do in the shop.

As for Rockler listing this - I don't know why they don't see it. It's been in the Delta catalog for a few years as an X5 but as burrellski pointed out - it's pretty much the same machine as the 37-195 - in fact, it's the exact same instruction manual.

I will point out that the Amazon price for this thing jumps all over the board so if you are not in a hurry, maybe watch the price on Amazon or some other sites for awhile - it's been pretty low at times and when I bought mine they tossed in the mobile base.

I'm very interested in this X5 jointer deal. Has anyone been able to get the Rockler item number on this?

                    Thanks,

                    Mike

                      Isn't ~46" pretty much standard for a 6" free-standing jointer
There are long bed 6" jointers and there are 8" jointers that generally have a standard length about the same as 8" jointers

for example Grizz's 6" is 47 inches long and the 8" is 75" long.

It is true that many of the 6" jointers come with a table length similar to the X5. And that seems to be a common reason people go up to an 8" model. Powermatic, Steel City and some Grizzly 6" models have 10-20" longer beds, but at a price.

I have the X5 one and got it from the Amazon deal (1yr ago I think) for ~$320 to my door AR (small gloat )

I really love the machine, it was all in alignment when I got it so I can't comment on that. The only problem that I had was getting one of the bolt on the back of the fence to catch when trying to attach it to the bracket, a 50 cent bolt (metric thread) with longer threads at the hardware store and i was set.

I have it hooked up to the smaller Jet DC and it runs like a champ regardless of if I take a small or big bite on each pass. I have never moved the fence from the 90 deg option but at 90 deg it is good for face planing and I've used it on both hard and soft woods with great results.

Mike what's the Freud # for new blades? I'm not needing a new set just yet but I will in the near future and its always nice to have things onhand so you don't get stuck in the middle of a job.

O.K. this is the bargain section---right? I would very much like to get one of these X5 jointers at Rockler this weekend. I don't know where you got all of these details because I called a few Rockler retail stores and their mail-order store and all I have been able to find is a Delta 37-866x which Rockler sold a while back on special (it was actually the same as the 37-275x). No one has any information on the deal you describe. The price listed for the 37-866x was $399 but there are no more available.

Really appreciate info on the deal even if you discover it is a one of a kind deal at your local store.

                              Thanks,
