I have the black handle CM chisels and they are great for construction projects , good price on sale, made in USA,, metal end cap, LTW, not really for fine WW. I use my Marples for that.
On the fence w. this as I do not have any wooden handle ones, but I just think that the steel may be very soft.

I'm also siding with Ken's point .... my experience has been pretty much the same and your only going to get what you pay for ... don't expect them to hold an edge long, or as long as a higher quality chisel will ... I got tired of having to constantly sharpen cheap chisels.

But for $7 delivered they do make an excellent set for any "rough" woodworking or carpentry work IMO.

I just fiqured they would work well for me at this point. If I find I need something better I can always upgrade. They did have good reviews and for the price I thought it would be worth giving them a try.

Cops have a term for a weapon to be tossed into a crime scene. We need a term for tools that can be lent or used to spare the good ones.

I've got some blue handled Marples that do not get used by another human being, no matter who they are. These will be good for 'term we haven't thought of yet', or keeping in the truck with the wrecker bar for spontaneous deconstruction.

            Which is what?

Btw, I've been trying to add those chisels to my cart and they won't go. Guess someone is telling me something, so I will take a pass. Was only going to use them for rough work anyway as I've got some Two Cherries coming. Anyone interested in picking up some quality chisels should contact Holbren to see if he's got some more coming in... he was asking $100/110 for them. They get great reviews. Brian, just don't send "my" chisels to one of these guys. :-)

I have a convoluted proposal for such a name:

              an "Ellis"

              1) most such tools are imports, and Ellis Island of NY is the infamous entry point for immigrants
              2) Ellis stands for El-Ess or "LS" as in tools to be "Lent" or "Spent"
              3) It is cryptic requiring newbies to ask a lot of questions

              Usage:
Here's a set of Ellis chisels for $7...

              Well, I tried.

I'm honored that an elder thinks this is a worthy suggestion, and I think that's a great term for the "term to be named". When I wrote the post about cops' disposable weapons, I couldn't remember what they were called--it came to me later: throwdowns.

LS can mean all kinds of appropriate things and doesn't seem to be any standard abbreviation for anything else.

Heck, even 'else' sort of fits.

Lend to Sleaze. Less Sturdy. Less essential (almost fits). Leech Stuff. Lured Sucker. Least Sticky. Lend or Steal.

Lend/Spend, per your second point, really says it all.

It's also got a real strength, relative to newbies asking questions: it's got the resonance of something they think they ought to know, and it's almost, but not quite, figure-out-able.

Reminds me of my college days, when the guy with the stereo that cost more than a whole year's tuition, room, board and books (in '75, plain good stereos cost more than one semester's $350 instate tuition) had a 'decoy' sitting where thieves might see it and kept the other hearable but not visible.

And, unbelievably, his last name was Ellis.

Anyway, I got the 'not available' email today, as well, so no Ellis chisels for me. Another forum rush on a supplier! That's influence...

I received an email that 2 sets of chisels have shipped. I ordered an extra set for a friend, but it turns out that he doesn't want one. On ebay it will go then.

Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that! -Rocky Balboa-
