The handles appear to be Ash. If they wil hold a decent edge, it should make a good user set. Like you said, at that price, how can you go wrong?

At that price you could use them to dig nails out of boards

Guess I'm going to be the first to differ. I went the way of HF and low end Craftsman chisels at first. It's true they are good for practicing sharpening, cause you'll be doing it a lot. A chisel that won't hold an edge ruins projects and makes you use very bad words!
A good quality like Marple is an investment in your time and your finished projects.

I have to agree with Ken -- mostly.

I don't think you can go with the super low end chisels for woodworking. It seems like they dull as soon as you begin and then you start tearing the wood instead of cutting. You are forcing the chisel and have more slips and mistakes, some of which can be dangerous.

The cheap chisel with low grade steel are great for practicing sharpening. I've used those to teach some Cub and Boy Scouts how to use stones or sandpaper for tool sharpening. They can also be used for rough carpentry work to save your better chisels. You aren't too afraid to bang on them, even with a regular hammer which you would never do with your good chisels.
