I was told by Marc Adams in a class a few years ago that Two Cherries chisels were the "bomb-diggity". He spoke very highly of them.

      Some links to reviews

Googled these and here are some links to save you the time...

This is a seemingly thorough review that has these chisels tied for 1st place:

      http://www.woodcentral.com/bparticles/chisel_review.pdf

Regarding polishing, a quick Google turned up conflicting viewpoints... what are the opinions here??

This woodworker's review favors the polished chisels...
      http://www.sawdustandshavings.com/ha...els_review.asp

This is an excerpt from another site with opposite view...

Two Cherries chisels are well known for coming with a highly-polished finish. The polishing process creates a mirror finish on the surface of the steel, which looks very nice, and reduces friction with the wood. But the polishing process, done with a soft wheel, rounds the bevel and the face of the chisel slightly. When one would like to do very precise work with wood, completely flat surfaces are a must. So for those who value being able to do the finest work, we sell Two Cherries chisels that have been ground and sharpened to a very high standard, but with no mirror finish. Thanks for the reviews, didn't know they were out there. I'm surprised the Ashley Iles did so poorly, they are supposed to be good chisels. I think the english chisels in general are too soft, IMHO.

          A good deal??

New to higher end chisels, I'm not sure this is a good value? Been considering the LVs or the Marples as entry but should I consider this a great deal?? I know the chisels are highly regarded. LMK your opinions. Thanks

The answer is yes. These are indeed higher end chisels, and the price is very good. I don't personally own these, but the research I have made over the years backs up the claim, that these are great chisels.

Personally, I own several sets of the 900 series Stanley chisels, the 6 piece Marples, the Woodcraft set, and the Japanese chisel set from the Japanese Woodworkers store. These all are satisfactory, and will perform nicely.

                  Jerry,

The Two Cherries tools are super stuff. Try one once and you will be forever hooked and it will be the one tool you compare all others to.

My Footprint chisels are now my general purpose chisels. When I need the finest cut, I grab a Two Cherries.

                      Richard,

I was thinking of selling the Footprint chisels as a "starter set" but was hoping for something more priced like the Irwin/Marples. What do you think of them and curious what made you buy them.

I bought the Footprint because they were on sale at the time. They didn't have any Two Cherries chisels so I was limited in choice.

I have a couple of Stanley chisels. The Stanley chisels sharpen the easiest which is likely due to softer steel. The Two Cherries chisel I got was brand new and it took longer to sharpen than any of the Footprints. I would say that places the Footprint steel quality in between Stanley and Two Cherries. I have a Stanley #60 and a 16-909.

I know some people detest Footprint's plastic handles. I have no complaints. I have the 87 series with the blue plastic handles. I will poke around and see if my observations are on par with other's.

Thanks Richard. I have heard from some that the footprint chisels are made in Taiwan now which I don't care about but their website still says they pound the steel there. So if shipping steel to Taiwan to get plastic handles molded is what people were up in arms over, again who cares.

Maybe I'll get a sample set and try them out. I was trying to find a 6 piece set in the $50 range that were decent and I don't have accesss to Irwin or Stanley.

                              Brian,

The FP Chisels I have say Made in Sheffield on the blade. Now if that means the blade and handle were put together in the UK from imported materials, I don't know.

                              http://www.indianindustry.com/cgi-bi...ompid=1qYGm5E=

The website above says "We have chisel tools, stanley chisel, punch tools, chisel marples, punch tools, footprint and many other varieties of chisels. "

The implications are rather sobering and may explain why there have been some consistancy issues in various brands.
