    HF Mortiser surprise

I decided to pony up the $80.00 for a HF hollow chisel mortiser. That is sale price of $99 plus the no-date 20% off coupon. The surprise was that it comes with tapered extension and extra chuck so you can use it as a little drill press. There is no mention of the extra chuck in the owner's manual and I haven't heard anyone mention it yet, so maybe it's a new feature. I'm thinking it would be a good place for a sanding drum to live.

This mortiser is black instead of the usual green, but otherwise exactly the same.

BTW, they have the 4" XY vice for $29.99. I got one to use with the mortiser. I first tried cutting mortises with the stock hold down and it is really marginal. Work beautifully with the XY vice though.

Now I'm wondering if you could chuck a spiral router bit in the extension and have a sort of wood milling machine. Just a thought, as the speed might be too slow or it might be too flexy.

if its a regular chuck that fits on a taper, they don't liek to have a lot of side load like a milling machine might put on it.
    The chuck might fall off.

That's exactly what it is Loring. I kind of doubt if it would work also. The extension is around 4" long, so there would be a lot of leverage. Will probably still try it some day if I ever get a spiral bit.

What modifications did you do to install the x-y vise?

Messmaker, I used the design frome this link. Note that you will probably want to disassemble the vice and reassemble it so the hand screws point out. I had to drill and tap a couple of holes in the body of my vice to accept the stop plate. It was pretty easy since the metal is quite soft. I used a 6 x 1 metric tap because it matched the bolts(and it was the only size I have). I think anything close would be OK though.

BTW there was a thread about doing this about a month ago.

General question here, are chucks normally friction fitted?

Thanks. I have YC mortiser and the chuck fell out when I took it out the box. By design it seemed to be friction fitted however there seemed to be some form of thread in the middle where a screw could go. It's working fine, I just want to make sure it stays that way.

Here's a link which actually works to see an xy vice on a mortiser.

Tapered extension and extra chuck fits in HF Lathe

The great thing about that extra check is that it fits into the HF "36" lathe and you can do horizontial (sp) boring.

Sears has a small note at the bottom of page 3 of the current CC flyer (20% off all craftsman vices)
Somewhat a step up in price but also quality,
The have several XY machinists vices in their 180 page annual tool catalog.
pg 110. The small 3''x3'' is $80 reg price.
Also Palmgren sell quite a few on Amazon

                          Hey Andrew

Yes, the 4" xy vice is on sale all month for $29.99. I think that's only $10 off, but still has to be the best deal out there. For that kind of money, you don't mind drilling a few holes.

Is the HF Mortiser now on sale for $100.00 in Retail stores? If so when does the sale end?

I don't see it listed in the sale brochures I have.
