    Rockler sales tax rate

Note of caution. Check your sales tax rate when you buy from Rockler. They keep charging me 8.75% instead of the required 8.375% for my County. I brought this to their attention and they refused to admit they're wrong, and keep telling me a hogwash story of that is what is charged for online purchases. Apparently they select another County's rate and using it for the whole state. I may have to set their local Sheriff on them for overcharging on sales tax.

Don't know about NY, but in Texas there are zip codes that have 3 different sales tax rates. Leads to confusion with online purchases sometimes. But certainly should not apply to in-store buys.

I think if they have a store in the same state (even if in another county) they have to charge the sales rate for that store location. But I may be wrong.

There are 3 tax rates that apply for most of the USA. Although there are cases where there can be up to 6 rates.

The tax rate for NY / KINGS county / Brooklyn is 8.375%.

The actual breakdown is as follows.

        1) State 4%
        2) County 4.375%
        3) City 0%

The max in NY is 9.5% in ONEIDA county.

To the best of my knowledge that is no additional tax in NY for online sales.

Also sales tax is collected based on the location of the end user in NY not the stores.

As a seperate note, the use tax is the same for the whole state.

I'll bet that's it. usually if a on-line merchant has a retail presence anywhere in the state where the buyer lives, they have to collect state sales tax as if he were buying it at that store.

If a business has a presence in a given state, all online orders within same state are charged sales tax that is at the business location. In case of NY Rockler - it is Buffalo, Erie county, where tax is 8.75%.
It does not even have to be a retail store - Newegg is 100% online, but they have a warehouse in NJ. As a result Newegg orders shipped to NJ are taxed. Because of that, I often use Directron over Newegg - their prices are very much on par with Newegg, service is great, and while orders take a while longer to arrive (from Texas), no sales tax.

What is this "sales tax" you guys are talking about?

I know they get me one way or another, but I've been fortunate to have spent most of my life in either Montana or Oregon...no sales tax in either state.

Although it's not a concern for me with online sales, it's always seemed a bit unfair to me for online retailers to charge a sales tax. If I buy something across the river in Washington (where they have sales tax), I simply show my Drivers License and the tax is waived (though I always forget to show my DL).

In every state I've lived in (about a dozen of them) sales tax on almost all items is charged based on the store's location, not your house location.

Do retailers in your area ask for your address before they ring up the sales tax?

The most common exception is cars.

I'm not sure if it's still the case but a few years ago when my company would deliver material to a contractor, be it at a jobsite or their shop, we were required to charge the applicable state, county and municipal tax that applied at the shipments destination. We made deliveries statewide so talk about a bookkeeping nightmare.

Darn it! I eat crow. I didn't realized they have a store in Buffalo. It didn't show up on their store location search. Only place it shows is on the catalog mail-in order form. Is this a new store?
