    HF Mortiser $99

Been looking for one of these and want to know if there is any reason not to buy at this price? I know several on the forum have one of these and I would like some feed back before I pull the trigger.

LOML is out of town for a week so now would be the time to buy for those two reasons.

For others who migh be interested the item number is 35570-2RTH.

    TIA.

    Bob,

$99 is the best deal that most people got and are happy with. I checked the website and it is listed for 159.99. Where did you find your deal?

Oh, make sure you pick up a honing bit for the chisels from rockler or woodcraft.

    John

In order to get the price Bob mentioned, you need to enter the order by going through the Order From Printed Catalog prompt and entering the whole PN that he listed.

rockler had a sale on those this thanksgiving, they were selling the delta one for $149 (i believe, i could be wrong, but will check to see if i still have the flyer). i am planning on waiting for a deal like that than buy it from hf, unless someone posts some good reviews. i not too keen on their stuff, didnt get a good feeling walking thru the store.

Search for reviews of it under Bargains Alerts and Tool Talk. I know it's been discussed sometime over the past year by those who have it. I think it was in a Delta Mortiser thread.

            Good luck,
            Greg

There have been a bunch of reviews and a bunch of buys of this mortiser. I have one. It is OK. But with the addition of an X-Y clamping table which I got on sale it became a great mortiser. Cost me a total of around $150 in the end but it's better than 99% of the high end mortisers now. Pat

Here's a thread with pics on adding an xy vise to the HF mortiser.

You can get it for less than $99 with those 15% coupons. I got mine for $60 last year (20% coupon and $20 gift card). Also got a 4" xy vise for $31 on ebay last week.

Thanks for the replies. As for the $100 butt kickin', this is nothing. Should have seen her when she saw the Rigid Planer. She did not say much, just wanted to know if I needed it. To which I responded, YES. Still got the plasma TV I have beed wanting for a couple of years, too. She is great about my addiction. Although she has not seen the clamps I bought during Lowe's closeout.

Sounds like with the addition of the XY vise to this machine it is a serviceable piece of equipment.

                  Thanks again.

                  Bob

I've had the $99 HF mortiser for 4 years and it works ok. The plastic depth stop thing doesn't work and the fence and clamp are hard to set up but it is serviceable. Screwing, bolting, or clamping the thing down while in use is a must because of the force needed to get the chisel through the wood and the tendency for it to bind in the wood on the upstroke. The chisels seem high quality and seem to work good - I'm still using the originals. My improvised depth stop is a pencil line on the chisel. I really want to do the xy clamp modification and I have some craftsman/mission stuff on my list (with through tenons) so I will have a good excuse soon.

I haven't seen a 15% coupon in weeks. Anyone have a link to one?

There is a 20% coupon here somewhere but I don't know where. I used it to buy the dust collector last time it was on sale. Just a warning, the cashier told me when I gave it to her it was expired. She asked the manager and he took anyway. (Tears will help your cause. I am not proud.)

Picked it up today. Won $600 in the lotto the other night, so after I take LOML to a nice dinner I'll go shoppin'.

                          Thanks for the input.
