HD dumping

I was in two HD's in pa yesterday and they were dumping the floor models of a lot of Ryobi and ridgid tools.

I was thinkin of all the stuff I need/want.

It seems HD is going the way of pictures-only for a lot of their heavier machinery. Pretty soon, you won't be able to handle ANYTHING before buying....

Thankfully that doesn't seem to be trend around here yet. I don't know about anyone else, but for a lot of my purchases, if I can't play with it first, I won't buy it.

selling. i too won't buy it there if I can't see it and plug it in. They really hate when I make them plug in the floor model.

I like the selection better at Lowes but no ryobi stuff...

I do a lot of traveling, and routinely stop into HD's I've never been to before. Some of the HD's have a serious power tool department, with beautiful displays and plenty of space. They are easily 4X's the size of the typical area.

This is in contrast to the closest one to me, which has to be one of the most dumpy stores on the planet. They always have several display models for sale, and they always look like they have been tied to a trailer hitch and driven around the parking lot. The perplexing part is, they are only about 10-15% off, and I am not exaggerating about the said condition....safe to say, I never visit that location since a new one opened up in the opposite direction.

the 3 mile HD put all their floor tools on a small "stage".

the 8 mile HD eliminated what had been a pretty good size area and installed self-check outs. the tools are now on the bottom row (floor row) of shelves in the tool department.

Can't power any of them up at either place.

The CEO and Board at HD are idiots. They are putting in self checkouts when the grocery stores are taking them out.

Personally, I have NEVER had the self-checkout work correctly. All too often I get into the "Unathorized item in the bagging area. Please remove item." "Item removed from bagging area. Please return item." dance. Often it's ten minutes or so before I can get help. I'd rather wait in line.

So what? They don't know how to set em up, anyway.

Hey, I'm not saying it's a tragedy or anything. I simply stated that they are no longer having floor models in many cases, which would explain why they are selling them off.

However, I do like to have the actual tool in front of me. I don't need the machinery set up to precise tolerances to see how the fit and finish is for most of it. If a TS surface is built solidly and have a good even finish, then that has absolutely nothing to do with how it's set up.

i've been going to this one hd for the last three years, and they had the same old bt3100 on display, initially it looked good, that is why i bought one. but over the years, i noticed parts were missing or broken and or stuck! so about a month ago, they had on sale for something like $50 less, and for the **** of it, i said i'll buy it, but not at that price because the miter table was missing, fence handle was missing, no tools for to remove blade, mounting screws were missing, the machine had dings on the sides, well with all that the manager said we will give it to you for $200! i offered, if you give it to me for $50, i'll take it (i think its worth the parts for that...), he siad no, instead, he told the guy to take it down and rtv (return to vendor). thier other display stuff was marked down too, but not that much, you might aswell spend a little more and get the whole thing .....

but if you keep looking, you can find a deal at times, but they sure dont last long at all.

i love those self check out, i rarely get into the "take item out of bagging area" battle, it sure does cut down on time.

It should be interesting to see what the future holds for HD as I noticed their CEO quit the first of the year with a severance package of 210 million dollars. Seems the shareholders weren't happy with their profits and the CEO didn't like the pressing concerns that they had. Sometimes new management is good for the consumer, inventory turnover, and house cleaning deals. Sometimes it may be a leaner meaner retailing machine to make an impression on the stockholders. Not to mention paying off the CEO that just quit $210 million. Wonder which way it'll go?

I stopped by Home Depot yesterday morning with some gift cards I'm itching to use but as you guys have said, they're proud of those dinged up 'as-is' floor models. Unless manager is there, they will only mark down item 10% which is a joke because (as I told the lady) I can get 10% off by just whining about a torn box. It's usually at this point that the LOML decides to walk away and look at the garden section.
