A little help, please. Deal or no deal?

And, no, I don't watch the Deal show. Anyway, I came across a DeWalt plate joiner on the closeout bench at HD today. It didn't have the case, chip bag, bag snout or the blade wrench. Dang, I've forgotten the model number but the complete one of the same number was marked "Reg $229, Sale $189" and the closeout one was priced at $99. I talked with the dept head and he said it was either a return or one used in-house (a plate joiner in-house?) and it had no other parts but still carried a full warranty. I walked away but what do you think, should I go back? It seems like every time I go cheap I have some issue.
    Blessings,

If you can get one refurbished for $99.00, that's the way I'd go. If you can't, it seems like a decent price to me if it carries the full warranty.

I say No deal. Could be more trouble than its worth. Too bad you came in a little late. Member name: aimlessoul was offering a Porter Cable 557 plate jointer for the same price on this thread.

Street price is around $140-150 for NIB.
Seen refurb go for around $99 as mentioned.
so I don't think its a great deal, but OK as long as you
can return it if it doesn't work and isn't missing key parts
(basically the bag and dust port adapter to the bag and/or vac and I think a wrench.

Thanks. I'm steering clear and looking toward a refurb, thanks to you advice, folks. I've had good experience with refurbs in the past so back I'll go.

Go with the PC. The PC has some features on it that are patented.

But the titanic was a UK design.

The other way around, I believe

As far as I remember, it was DEWALT who had patent on certain feature of the plate joiner. Namely the part that has to do with putting slots on flat face of the wood panel.

So, PC lost the court battle and had to modify their design which made it such that if you use 557 to put a slots on the face of the wood panel, the face does not FULLY come to the material making it very difficult to put the correct 90degree slots. (So I hear)

I believe this was fixed in Type 3 fence (which is on the serial number portion of the joiner) so it may be a moot point here though.

So, there was a website which sold a copper shims to be used on 557's if you have type 2 fence. (Type 1 fence is ok since it was pre law suit time).
