    Ryobi 1301 Thickness Planer

For me, this was just too good a deal to pass up. HD has the Ryobi 1301 (the somewhat improved model) thickness planer on sale for $200. If you're a veteran, you get an additional 10% of this weekend. $180 out the door (no sales tax in Oregon) for this machine seemed like a no-brainer. Life is good.

I think this weekend's sale circular shows the AP1300 at $199.

$199? OK, it was actually on sale for $199.99. Got me.

The promo card specifically said 1300 but it was the 1301 that was on sale.
I forget right now exactly what the fix was on the 1301. I think something with the chip ejection and letting the rollers clog up, supposedly fixed with the 1301. There's a letter and response in the October 2005 Woodworker's Journal.

Anyway, I'm happy. If that changes in a year, I'm still good.

I think you are correct with regard to the changes made to "update" 1301 from the 1300. Unfortunately, I think, they also removed the infeed and outfeed support tables, as well as the tool storage compartment on top of the unit. With these features gone, the price dropped significantly from the "1300" normal retail of $279.

I may be mistaken, but I think the regular price of the new 1301 is now $199. (Still, an unheard of price for a thickness planer!) One must be careful with the Home Depot circulars. Very few items shown are actually "sale" priced. When they are on "sale", it is usually marked as such and the regular price is shown also. The LOML, refers to the HD circulars as the "Weekly Festures".

Chuck, I'm not trying to debate you or say you're wrong.

The HD Circular for zip code 23060 shows a picture of the AP1300. A lot can change between Oregon and Virginia. Especially with the BORG. I should have stated that what I saw was for my specific area.

When initial reviews of the 1301 first started popping up, I hurried out and bought a 1300 while they were still on the shelves.

The picture in the local (Corning, NY) flyer is definitely the AP1300. Although small, you can clearly see the silver infeed table and the corner of the outfeed table. Also, the silver tool cover can be seen on top and the thickness adjustment handle is different.

Here is a link to the current AP1301: http://www.ryobitools.com/power/tool/ap1301/

I can't speak for the "improvements", but the beforementioned items are definitely an effort to reduce the cost of the unit down to the current $199.

                On Clearance

Just returned from local HD and they had the older model 13 inch planer on clearance for $139. Don't know if this is only local or not.

                  AP1300 Display Model

                  phrog

Based on your post I went down to my local HD this morning and convinced them to sell me their AP1300 display for $139.

                  Thanks!

I got fooled into thinking the 1300 was on sale. Got to the store and saw that $199 is regular price (though $249 online).

Funny thing, if you look at the circular online, click on the picture of the 1300, then click "Buy online," it is actually the 1301 that comes up (for $249).

So I went to the store in hopes of getting the 1300 (not convinced the 1301 is an improvement), but they had none in stock. No 1300's, no 1301's. Just one beat 1300 on display. HD guy said 4 more are coming next week, and said they would be 1300's, but when I pointed out that their SKU #'s were the same for both, he wasn't so sure. I'll check back next week...if they don't have the 1300, I'll make an offer on the display.

Can someone verify if the 1301 has a cutterhead lock and adjustable infeed/outfeed?

Any chance of somebody posting a copy of a receipt showing $139? I found an open box AP1300 locally but they will only knock 10% off the price. They have the new AP1301 on display and they both have the same SKU#.

Take a look at the manuals for the AP1300 and AP1301 on the Ryobi website. From what I can tell, the 1301 LACKS a cutter head lock and repeatable depth stop that are present on the 1300.

                            AP1300 Receipt

It is hard to read the store number at the top of the receipt but it is 1763.

                            Hope this helps!

Back during the holidays (or perhaps right after the first of the year), I recall they had the 1300 units marked down to something like $175. My local store only had two plus the display model. I procratinated and the two 1300's were gone within a day or two.

When they received their first 1301, I talked to the store manager with the hope that I could get a bargain on the 1300 display unit. NO dice, all he would say is that they're only allowed to give 10% on display items. I pointed out that it was missing several parts, but he wouldn't budge. It sat there for another couple of months and then finally disappeared. I asked one of the tools sales guys if it got sold, but all he knew was that it just came up missing one day.

Personally, I think the 1301 has just been cut down too much to get the price as low as possible. I'm not sure what this does for performance, but it seems to me that not having the infeed and outfeed tables would be a bit of a problem.
