I was in the local BORG today and I noticed that the Ryobi 13" planer was marked at $199. It previously was $279. I think they must have lowered the price since it wasn't on sale as far as I could tell. The price sticker said that the Model was AP1300 however on the Box it said the Model was AP1301. Maybe its a newer Model with a lower price.

AP1300 display
Just went to the local BORG and picked up an AP1300 display model for $160. I wasn't all that impressed with the AP1301--no infeed\outfeed table or cutterhead lock that I could see. You may want to call the stores in your area and try to grab one of their AP1300 display models, if there are any left. The tool sales manager was more than happy to sell me the display model at a discount now that the new ones are coming in. Good Luck.Comment

BTW: I hear you Buff. I also wanted the Ridgid, but couldn't justify twice the price. Ryobi (1300) and the Ridgid have one top value awards in the magazines.Comment

I just got one. Tried the HF 20% coupon at a couple of stores, but they wouldn't take an "internet" coupon. So, I used a Lowe's 10% and a gift card from Christmas.
That thing's pretty heavy. I'll have to unpack it to get it up 2 flights of steps.
Now, this REALLY is my last tool purchase for a while."Success is gettin' what you want; Happiness is wantin' what you get." - Brother Dave Gardner (1926-1983)Comment

Apparently it was listed on Home Depot's website back in November. Here a message from the Ryobi Forum:Originally posted by DeadheadThe new model of the Ryobi planer is in stores?

They show a Ryobi AP1301 on the Home Depot website. Looks completely different than the 1300, one obvious difference is a one peice bed - no folding extensions.
Strange that it's been on the website and not in stores and now showing up in stores but no longer on the website.

And a no-show on the Ryobi website. I really expected to see it on their website before any retailer's. But for the current price and features, the 1300 was perfect for me.Originally posted by StormbringerStrange that it's been on the website and not in stores and now showing up in stores but no longer on the website.

If you follow the Ryobi website and their forum you know that any new products are in the stores for months before their acknowledged on their site. It's always been that way with them for some bizarre reason.Originally posted by DeadheadAnd a no-show on the Ryobi website. I really expected to see it on their website before any retailer's. I checked my local HD today and they had only one of the new models. I don't like the look of it at all and it seems that not having any infeed or outfeed tables in a real loss to the product. I have no experience with planers, but was hoping to pick one up in the near future. It just seems like the fold-out tables would be essential to the operation and especially if you want to eliminate snipe. Any experienced folks out there, please offer your advice about this.
The store did have the older model on display and I asked about buying it, but the store manager didn't seem too keen on the idea and said he might be able to let it go for 10% off ($180). Of course the demo is missing the manual and a couple of parts (that they know of), so I don't think this is much of a deal at all. So, for now I guess I'll just set my sites on the Ridgid model and save a little longer.

ap1301 and ap1300
I THOUGHT I bought the AP1300, at HD - (it was the displayed model, and the stock was right below, boxed, marked 199.00) When I got home, i saw it was the newer 1301 model. Could not find ANY info on the new model, and I even called Ryobi to let them tell me the difference. Their response was along the lines of, 1. "it's lighter," and 2. "it does not have the infeed/outfeed tables." I brought up the point that the gear and chain was on "top" of the 1300, and below on the 1301. "Would this change the cutting characteristics, since the 1300 has a pretty good reputation?" I asked. The customer service agent did not know. To end this long story, I took the "newer" 1301 back to a different HD and got an AP1300 for the same money. ~ 199.00. That is the price they (both) are selling for here in Michigan. I don't know which is better. But I can say the 1300 is A LOT heavier/sturdier than the newer model. Again, I don't know which is better. Just my observations (2 cents). I just felt for the same money, I would stick to what is known, the 1300.
edited....
Just wanted to add, I have NEVER used either machine. I just wanted to point out initial observations about both. So if i've confused anyone, I apologize.

congrats DonCook-check a couple of things...
I'd read on a few posts that the knife screws can be overtightened at the factory and you won't know it until knife changing time six months down the road or so. Then, you can't get some of them out and strip the allen bold heads inside and have a real tough time. Forum members have complained that the Borg won't do anything the help them after a three month or so window from date of purchase.
I took mine out one by one and put a little grease on them to make sure they will come out down the road.
My tension chain did not have the tension spring where it should have been and so I fixed that also.
Have fun. I read up on the unit here before buying it.Comment
