    I've got a wood disease

I estimated too low for my kitchen project (forgot to add in face frames) and needed more poplar. Guy on CL said he was selling 130bf of poplar for 90cent/bf. So it turns out it wasn't all poplar--mostly red oak--but enough poplar to get the job done. This stack measures 8' long x 30" wide x 8 boards high.

Anyway, he's selling his house and I guess he just wanted it gone so he said the whole thing for $100. OK, if I must

I haven't had a wood storage issue for a while. Now I do again! I've also shunned red oak for a while but I guess I'll have to come up with some projects--presents, I suppose.

Nice problem to have Paul. Around here folks want to get what they paid, plus the gas it cost to get it home, plus the cost of lunch and the drinks they had on the way home as well.

Wow Paul, it really sucks to be you! I think you need a red oak curio cabinet.

        You may need a wood-ectomy.

or as they say in the commercials, if you have wood for more than 4 hours, call a doctor immediately.

Your affliction appears to be the early stages of "board-hoarding". First step in the recovery process is to divest yourself of some amongst the membership of a woodworking website community. This will also alleviate the sucking sound that accompanies this malady.

I totally jinxed myself by titling this post the way I did because I actually do have a wood disease in this stash! I guess I didn't knock on wood when I wrote it.

I was planing several boards of the poplar last night to make drawer boxes for the kitchen and started seeing bug tracks. Then I actually saw a bug still in one of the tracks. I used some blue tape to pull it out and it was still moving!

From what I can tell, it is some kind of powder post beetle. I ordered some Tim-Bor powder which I will mix up with some propylene glycol from work and then I'll apply it to all the wood I bought.

POed not just because I have a live infestation (although I've read it's nothing to be overly freaked out about) but because now this pushes the kitchen project back a few days/weeks while I wait for the borate to soak in and dry.

If I ever buy wood off CL again, I'm definitely going to spray it down before bringing it inside. I'm going to spray down all my other wood in the shop just to be safe. I have the red oak in the attic of my house so I've got to spray up there, too.

            Paul

Boy, it really bugs me when that happens.
