    My last formal exam was nearly 20 years ago (grad school) but I still have bad dreams about being ill-prepared for a test occasionally...

                Yes, it was real characters in real sentence form. Japanese use basically the same characters but add Japanese alphabetical symbols in with the Kanji. The Kanji/Characters will carry the same meaning across both languages.

                School, bank, road, white, friend, etc - same character, totally different sound for each language. There are more complicated differences but basic kanji characters are the same through Chinese, Korean and Japanese, and I think some SE Asian countries.
