Not to mention there is practically no indigenous wood over there! I was curious so did a quick search and they say there are two tree types in Qatar... acacia and prosopis. They say of the prosopis that there are 8 trees in one are and 13 in another, LOL

Get home safely to where there is actually some trees.

Nope - no indigenous wood here.

However - they're reasonably close to Pakistan - and if you've ever seen craftsmen from Pakistan and/or Kashmir ------ they're good enough to make most Americans want to simply quit.

Yes indeed!! I have seen some of their handiwork. Unbelievable what can be accomplished when you can just focus on a task and not be marketed to...

No, you don't need the latest kreg jig to build cabinets... no you don't need a powered lathe with a chuck to turn out chess pieces! I still remember that video we had on here of the street vendor who was turning with his toes!!!

Pakistan has some nice wood, do they bring it into Qatar at all? What was it that they had a lot of, rosewood?

Exactly 10 years ago I was at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. I never went into Doha though. Doha was known as "the place where some plants grow". There was no vegetation at Al Udeid.

If possible, enjoy your time there, it's a different world from the USA. Have safe travels.

Been going back and forth since 2005 --- usually the UAE (not many trees there, either).

Went from enduring the madness to embracing it --- and then back to enduring ---- which is where I figure I'll finish. Maybe some sheikh will convince me otherwise --- we'll see.

Colorado doesn't really have much to brag about wood-wise, either --- but at least it's comparatively available.
