So, after getting a 50% discount on Amazon Prime, I finally became a full-fledged Amazon Prime subscriber.
Even at $82 or whatever it is, I think it's an incredible bargain. I have used the streaming service through my computer and my PS3/TV, and even if it's not quite as good as Netflix, it's not bad at all. But of course, the best thing is the free 2 day shipping, and $4/item overnight shipping.
I've always wondered though- how much money are they losing with that on shipping- especially with the big items? I've had a Jet midi lathe bed extension shipped overnight for $4. That had to have cost more than I paid for the item itself... Well, it must have been an issue, as they are now incentivising people to go with slower shipping. They call it "no rush", and on smaller items I've gotten a $1 credit for Amazon video/ streaming services, and just now I ordered a piece of furniture that I was going to have overnighted for $4 (I'm at least 6 months away from finally getting my shop in order, and being able to make my first simple piece of furniture- and I'm tired of my house being largely unfurnished). But instead, I opted for the "no rush" shipping and got 10% off. They cap it at $10, so that's all I got, but that's still not a bad deal. I can wait an additional few days to get my item.
This may just be a way to reduce shipping costs during the holidays, but it'll be interesting to see if it stays around after the new year. But I do hope this doesn't signal the end of free 2-day shipping, as I do still like to have that option.
