Thumb update...

Had the stiches taken out yesterday. They were in for ten days. About an hour after it was done the dang thing split open. Nothing can be done after this length of time so it just has to heal from the inside out. Doen't really hurt anymore so that's good.

Try the butterfly type bandaid. At least it will help hold the skin closed, and keep it from getting "caught", and pulled open. Or, a regular bandaid, unless your doctor wants air to get at it.

Wounds on your digits always seem to take longer to heal. You really need to wash your hands more often as well as change a dressing more often simply because your hands come in closer contact to germs than other parts might.
You are always bending them as well.
I remember disarming a guy in the Army. He had a knife that cut my index finger longways across the middle joint. It took quite a while to heal. They only used butterflies on it. The doc said it had to heal slowly and that stitches would have been of little use there.
Hope it heals up quickly. Keep it clean with peroxide and alcohol mainly on the cut.

New studies recommend not to use hydrogen peroxide as a cleaner or wound healer, as it can negatively affect the cells in healing. My wife is a nurse and this where I get that kind of info. She recommends to use a saline solution a couple of times a day. Neosporin or Polysporin are good anti-bacterial ointments that are over-the-counter.

Truthfully though if I get a small cut somewhere, I do use Neosporin or Triple ointment more often than peroxide.

I don't know...I'll have to ask her later. I will say that a long time ago, I learned that anything that has access to our skin or an open wound gets into our bloodstream.

I have to disagree with your wife. Whenever I use whiskey to treat my wound, it seems to heal pretty well once I woke up the next morning

When I cut off part of my pinkie, I think I killed at least 3 bottles, Vicodin would have been cheaper, just don't taste as good.

Whenever I cut myself, I suck on the wound, spit, might suck again and spit, dry it with a tissue, then apply pressure with a band-aid. Never had an infection.
Certainly works for me!

Guys, this aint a cut. Ran my finger into the tablesaw blade. Got 8 stiches and a fracture of the finger tip. Can't use butterfly stitches now. They would just seal in germs and bacteria and cause more problems. And today, it actually opened up a little more. Going to have to stay out of the shop for a few days I guess.
