    oak tree eggs

The oak tree mast (what they call the dropping of acorns) has been huge this year. It's been going on for a month and a half already.

About 12 hours before this picture my wife swept the driveway clear. THis morning it looked like this.

The news said that every 8-10 years or so there's a really huge mast (crop of acorns) - this is the year. Apparently nature''s way of outdoing the consumers of acorns by sheer volume so that some survive and procreate. Even if the normal consumption of acorns in most years is close to 100%.

Its beginning to slack off but there's still more to come. I have found acorns in the middle of my shop - apparently they hit the roof in enough quantity that some eventually bounce through the turbine vents which normally don't even allow rain to come in.

I did fix my slingshot. It's fun to rocket these guys off and maybe sprout somewhere around the neighborhood. In any event, it's biodegrabale ammo!

What a mess. I've got a similar problem with almond seeds from an Almendra tree.

Here's an idea. Collect all the acorns and plant them in starter pots. Then you or your kids can sell them when they grow enough. Kids could set up a sidewalk stand. You could make thousands of $'s. Kids would get a sales commission.

I live in a part of town with a lot of old maple, oak and walnut trees. I have talked to some people that have deep lots with several mature oak or walnuts trees that fill 20 lawn bags full of acorns or walnuts. Leaves not included. You could always do what some people do with their leaves; sweep them into the street & make them the city's problem to clean up.

I haven't noticed many acorns falling from the neighbors oak tree this year. They are the great big acorns. A few years ago it dumped a lot. Sure did make walking over there barefoot uncomfortable.

I'm hoping for a bumper crop of Super Bowl tickets this year from my Ticket Oak.

You've got acorns, I've got (what I believe to be) hickory nuts. Loud as crap when they hit the roof.
I have a little blog about my shop

I think I recall an old saying about if it rains acorns its going to snow early and a be a cold, long winter. Anyone else recall hearing that one?

                  oak tree eggs...

Well I see that I'm not the only one with acorn problems! That is just squirrel food in my opinion, helps to draw them in position while I make ready with the
                  pellet gun!

Wasn't there a movie "Acorns On A Hot Tin Roof". Now that I think about it, it was a cat.

Don't have any Oaks on my place but they are all over my mail route. Acorns everywhere.

Yup. We in the south can plan on an extremely cold and longer than normal winter. I'm already getting x-tra firewood as well as a generator this yr as we are subject to ice storms here in the south and have been blessed without many here the past few yrs. We are due and I plan to be ready for it as our power routinely goes out during heavy lightning storms and rains in our area.Just hope those folks up in Jersey and NYC don't get slammed with to early of a winter with all they are dealing with now.
