    Computer Woes

Seems like everything decided to die at the same time.

The wife has been having problems navigating on websites with her laptop. Sites would open fine but either the links in the sites wouldn't work or, if they did, the back functions wouldn't work.

Mine would open webpages but most of them would give me a message of "done, but with errors on the page". Like her's, some functions in the ste would work, some wouldn't.

We have Norton Live tech assist service and had them go into both computers.

Mine they spent about 3 hours on at different times over 2 days and told me my Windows XP was corrupt and couldn't be repaired remotely. The recommended solution was to back up everything I wanted and have someone local clean the hard drive and then reload Windows.

Her laptop was originally Vista, upgraded to Windows 7. The problem with it is that the hard drive was starting to eat itself. Solution is to either replace the hard drive and start from scratch to install all her programs, or buy a new laptop. About the same $$$ either way.

Did a bit of quick research on line this morning and off we went.

She picked up a HP G7-1320us, 6 GB memory, 750 MB hard drive at Office Depot. Originally $699.99 marked down to $479.99 on clearance. The last one in driving distance (Austin to San Antonio) was the store display. Buying an open box item knocked off another 10%, and there is a $50 mail in rebate from HP. Office Depot also has a current promotioon for free data back up from the old to the new computer. Bottom line after taxes will be $417.55 for a $700 laptop.

I stayed with a desk top for mine. Went with an HP S5-1224 slim line unit with 6 GB memory and 1 TB hard drive for $476.29. No mark downs or rebates on it. Decided on the slim line CPU to save space. The only thing I am really losing is the second CD drive, but we have an external drive.

As the icing on the cake, my printer is on its last gasp. The copy function only works in color mode and it jams about 20% of the time. Cleaning the rollers is a temporary fix for the jams. I didn't replace it today but saw one we both liked. This is another area where we have always used HP. The one we looked at is an Epson Workforce WF-7510. It has a document feeder that we don't really need but what we liked was that it has an 11" x 17" scanner and 13" x 19" print capabillities. It also includes photosmart technology. Just want to do a little research on it first to see what user opinions / problems are out there.

    AIN'T TECHNOLOGY WONDERFUL????

I wouldn't trust Norton Tech support for anything. I woild bet it was some Nortion security settings or microsoft settings on the browser issues. Did Norton Tech say a hard drive was eating itself?!?

At least you got some new machines out of it.

That workforce sounds pretty cool, document feeders are really nice when you need them. I would love the larger format capabilities. I have a couple old Epson 11x17 flatbed scanners (which are SCSI). I don't think I can find any drivers for Win 7 for them.

Had similar problems with Firefox browser on my iMac, so obviously not a WinXP problem. Links and "back" not working sporadically, on some but not all web sites.

      Solved by reinstalling Firefox.
We all have to go sometime, just not yet!

The best thing we ever did was to get rid of Norton.

I have had good luck with the Norton antivirus and id safe programs. Pretty sure we are going to cancel the Norton Live (Tech support).

Found a major drawback to the Workforce printer. It won't print automatic 2 sided. Bummer, the Amazon reviews were outstanding. (26 of 36 were 5 star.) Looked at a Brother machine that I am going to check out closer. MCF-J6710dw and the MCF-J591dw. Versions of the same printer/scanner. The difference is one has an extra paper tray and a larger display screen. Both have the 11x17 scan bed but only 11x17 print capability (I think).

I'm phasing out Norton on my home systems, and I'll probably kill it at the office too, once I find a relatively inexpensive sever/client based system.

I've been having a lot more problems recently. One newish computer at home was getting unresponsive every little bit, cursor not moving etc., driving me nuts. Reinstalled mouse drivers a couple times. Then as I was watching my task manager I noticed an upswing in Norton's processor usage. I stopped the service and everything was fine.

There's been other instances, like the server install at the office. Symantec Corporate started taking up huge amounts of disk space with multiple instances of virus definition files. Locked up my dwg server a few times and was really screwing with my backups.

Peter Norton used to have some really good software, but most of the stuff Norton and Symantec puts out now is overpriced and buggy.

All this sounds like a bad dream coming back.

I got rid of Norton years ago - - now I am using Zone Alarm, AVG, and PC Tools Registry Mechanic. System is Win 7, 64 bit. I believe all anti-virus programs will slow down the computer a bit, but Norton was pretty bad. Slow down with AVG is hardly noticeable.

Also dumped HP after the last ink jet crashed (an all too frequent problem with HP). I now use an Epson Artisan 730 ink jet for color printing. A lot fewer problems and it seems to eat ink cartridges at a much slower rate.

              Regards, Steve.

Agreed, not a big fan of Norton, but a $499 hard drive? Admittedly, I haven't priced them in a couple of years, but that sounds really high. I saw a 500MB hard drive on New Egg for $109

                On the bright side---new machines

Another vote against Norton. Unfortunately I don't know who'd I'd recommend.

Trendmicro looked like a winner about 6-7 years ago, then I went with Sunbelt Security's Vipre (which rocked and was fast) but they got bought by another company (GFI) and I don't have the same faith in it.

AVG is OK for free stuff...

I used to get the Norton disks for free, and I put it on my computer once and literally removed it less than 2 hours later because it screwed up my system so much. I've heard Norton 360 is much better, but just don't trust it.

                  Good luck...

How about trying one of the Linux distro's via disc or USB key? If you find it all works, you might consider keeping one as a backup machine, that you could use that on, for diagnosing other problems or learning other things.

I've been looking at laptops or even possibly a new desktop but my Linux netbook still serves all my needs, so I haven't needed to upgrade yet.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials both at home and at the health clinic where we have 17 laptops and desktops.

Doesn't use up processor time like Norton Bloatware and the price is right...free!
You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

Went out after work yesterday to check out printers again. Pretty much decided I was looking at printers that were overkill for the home. Woman at Staples tried to sell me an HP 7500A. Really talked it up and pushed it hard as she talked down the Epson and Brother machines. Told her I wanted to go outside and check reviews/comments on it. Worst I have seen on Amazon. More 1 and 2 star ratings than 3, 4, and 5 star combined. she never came back to me when I went back inside.

Went to best Buy and Office Max in south Austin. The stores are next to each other so it was easy to compare printers between the 2 stores. Looked at the Epson Artisan printers and comparable Brothers. Decided against the Artisan mainly because of the extra ink cartridges (Black plus 5 colors). Office Max had the Brother MFC-J825DW and Best Buy carried the MFC-J835DW. Basically the same printers with the 835, according to PC Magazine, just a later version. Wired or wireless connection, printer, scanner, copier, and FAX. SD card slot, usb port, CD input. The paper tray has a seperate holder for photo paper nad they will print onto the CD's. Both listed at $149.99 but Best Buy had the 835 on sale for $89.99. Picked up a set of XL ink cartridges and got an extra $10 off at checkout.

Now just need to get the time to set it up and get my computer switched out. The wife has her new laptop up and running.

I've had the same all-in-one for years...it's a Lexmark. It just has a color and a B&W cartridge. What's weird is when a new cartridge is installed it asks if it's new. If the printer doesn't get used for several weeks, it doesn't print. Seems like there is a time sensor that tells that it's been there for a while. Maybe I just have to fiddle with it.

The printers aren't expensive, but the cartridges can be $30-$40. My wife has an all-in-one HP, that has separate cartridges for the colors, and B&W. They are cheaper than just one color cartridge. This one is wi-fi, and she can get everything to work except the fax part. Oh well. So. I loaned her my old phone/fax machine and she's happy enough.

                          .

I dumped Norton back in the late '90s

because it was a processor hog big time. Used AVG, Comodo, Kaspersky since then. Found they are good and not hogging up the processor.
Also as LinuxRandal posted, your could go with a Linux OS and not have too much to worry about needing an antivirus program, (it's been a few years since last using Linux, but I remember back in the days there weren't any virus out in the wild to hurt that OS).
My machine is the HP s5503w slimline and it's a really good machine at a cheap price; couple of hundred. The only down side is that it takes a slimline card to fit in the small case. And the printer we just bought is the Canon MG2120. Yes it is a cheap all in one printer, but for 29 dollars, it was on my desk. (as you can see, I AM THE CHEAP ONE! )

Another one that says dump Norton (or mcaffee or any of the other big ones) for AVG, Avast or MS Security Essentials, which I recently started using and have been pleasantly surprised with. All free. Also throw in Malwarebytes and Adaware for spyware/adware and you're all set for free--and your PC will run a lot better.

As for printing...take back the inkjet and go for a laser. Pay more upfront, but save a ton on ink in the future. I can't stand the ink racket. I used to buy AIO inkjets and just toss it (properly recycled, of course) when the ink ran out and just bought a whole new AIO. A lot of times it was cheaper.

Toner won't dry out or go bad. Of course, I avoid printing at all cost.
