The design change could have also been related to a change of suppliers, to make the tools fit better with a new manufacturer's process.
I wish you could point a link to what labeling change you keep referring to. I haven't seen one, only the court case stuff that dealt with the various tool brands I have bought (Mac, Husky and some other Stanley products found to violate the law).

Does anyone remember the JC Penny "Pencrest" line of tools with their lifetime warranty?

I am pretty sure it is Penncraft, not Pencrest and I think I might have one extension. However I do see them from time to time. The warranty is still good, although the last person I knew that turned one in, I believe got a Sears gift certificate. (been a few years)
How about (I am going to misspell this) Powerkraft? We still have a bunch of it in a work tool chest that was bought at an estate sale. The old "Monkey Wards" brand, and no as far as I know the internet company that bought that name, doesn't warranty them. (anymore then the stores that currently use the Western Auto name, warranty Wizard tools)
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I have a small set made by Allen that I keep in my vehicle.

      Beyond that, I'm 100% Craftsman.

I can pick up Craftsman tools at my local ACE hardware - which is hard to beat.
