    Spambots

Anyone else notice the birthday issue again:

    auto_012 (59)
    cash_000 (38)
    auto_013 (31)
    elizabethhoelFC7C (29)
    cash_123 (29)
    payday_000 (16)

Has anyone given thought to cleaning out the membership roll? Perhaps an email to inactive users and whatever rejected emails get purged? I hardly think less than 10% of our 17,900 users are active on this site. Just a thought.

I think you are being very generous with that 10% guesstimate.

LOL, i did say less than :-) I guess I should have said 1% - I think any of us would be hard pressed to name 179 active members...

Lets try, copy the string and add to the end with a comma, maybe the mods can use this for something.

The Member List only shows 2554 users. Looks like the minimum posts are 5 to be shown on that list.

In Admin/vbulletin options/forums home page options there are different ways to display Birthdays; Show Birthdays for Active Active Members, Acrive Members Time Cut-off.

The tough thing about the ones displayed today, they fall within a 30 day cut-off threshold since they registered yesterday.

Purging the rolls is time consuming and a pain. There's probably ways to automate checking the rejected emails. I don't know how to do it, and I wouldn't want to even check a small percentage manually.

SARGE isn't an active member anymore, something strange happened to his account. http://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=54200

          ^^^^^^^THIS
I use several methods to whack spammer and spam bot accounts, however I really can only do it one at a time. There are options to batch delete members however doing that will likely also delete genuine active or inactive members. Sarge is a great example of someone we do want as a member yet somehow his account was closed/ deleted although not intentionally. I would add him back if I had his details as I did for Mildoc.

oh gosh, let anyone now know, this list is not inclusive just a quick run down of my in/outbox and recent posts. Just a quick synopsis to perhaps help the mods, but they apparently have other methods of dealing with this and are well capable of taking care of it. cheers

No worries. Saw a potential for comedy and couldn't resist.

An observation about the forum having zilllions of members:

I have 'joined' several different forums because of the single requirement to be a member in order to view attachments. I'm sure there are some that I will never again frequent. Seems that that one requirement is aimed at getting maximum signup on a forum.

If it were eliminated, I'm willing to bet that less new people would sign up and many would be content to just monitor as guests.

with todays storage being so cheap, supporting 18,000 members is not a hardship for the memory requirements or speed of signing in.

The only thing purging members will do is free up some names that could be used again. Not a strong requirement either.

Probably best to let the names stay so that old members who ocassionally pop back in after a couple of years absence will not feel like they've been kicked off.

THe other problem with lots of member names is the length of searching for someone. Perhaps VB should have a member list option which restricts displaying names of those with less than x posts and/or not been on in N months.
