I grew up with a generation of carpenters who did that (made circles with a TS) but they were not that careless with their hands. That fellow looked like he as close to losing a finger or two.

Making cove moulding on a TS is what always scared me, but lots of people do it.

I had to shut it off. I just knew he was going to cut something off and I didn't want to see that.

I'm with Lee, well I understand the theory and technique (I'm young enough for him to be my dad!). Both circles and coves can be done safely, the BT3K even came with a circle cutting jig in the router kit. Pretty sure the tech is also published in Table Saw Magic. However it is all about understanding the risks and mitigating them to do this safely, something the video host fails to do.

I can only hope that Youtube gets sued big time for allowing nonsense like that to be posted.

I realize that they can't scrutinize every video that gets put out there, but who's going to share in the blame when somebody tries this and ends up missing digits?

I've cut many circles on the TS and the bandsaw. The video was a display of an archaic method. It can be done safely and extremely accurately by not using the fence, but rather clamping down a substrate (3/4" preferably) right next to the blade (to the right).

Center mount a pivot pin...it can be a 4d finish nail, and nip off the head at an angle. Cut your stock square the size of the OD desired. Place the pivot at the distance from the center of the blade into the substrate for the radius. Starting with the blade down (below the substrate), place the stock on the pivot (drill a perpendicular hole into the stock for a tight fit to the nail), and turn it slowly to see the rotation.

Start the saw and slowly raise the blade into the bottom of the stock to make minimal contact. Slowly rotate the stock for a revolution. Raise the blade 1/8" and do another rotation. Continue with this sequence until you cut all the way through. As the blade cuts it should be just skimming the edges of where the stock is flat to start with. When it cuts through, there are 4 corners that come off.

              .

Think I'll run out and try that as soon as I get home tonight. Especially want to jerk the jig off a running blade then turn it sideways and shove the metal edge back into the blade before it stops!

                NOT!

If people go out and try every little thing they hear about or see, then that's their problem. He did post multiple disclaimers about how you shouldn't do this, and that he'd likely be providing a how-to on first aid.

If someone still tries it after that, then I don't know what to tell you. Who's going to share the blame? Only the idiot who tries it.

Hello........ we all do things that look stupid to others. Being a flat land southern boy that rarely sees snow, I think that sliding down a snow covered mountain through the trees and rocks with boards on your feet, or hanging on an inner tube is the most stupid thing ever dreamed of. Would I go as far as say it should be outlawed? no, because someone might want to outlaw some of the wonderful things we do in the south that might seem stupid to them. (even if I can not imagine what they might be!)

I personally think that texting and driving should be punishable by amputating the limb that is holding the "device", so what is wrong with cutting a circle with a table saw?

I bet a bunch of you safety freaks would really break and run when you saw me get out the circular saw to cut a piece of 1/4" cold rolled steel plate.

If I can find the ytube of the of the Pakastan artist carving a wood figure using a bench grinder with a stack of saw blades on the shaft rather than a stone, I will post it for you. They you will really squirm.

i have to agree with capncarl about lightening up. and did anyone notice the opening frame referring to the shepherd SCHOOL!!! and checked out some of the subject's bio? once you do that, it kind of puts the entire video in a more relevant context.
there's a solution to every problem.......you just have to be willing to find it.

LOL Bruce! There is just more than one way to look at something and I cringe when I read call a lawyer as an answer to a perceived problem. Sam Colt belived in personal responsibility and freedom to choose did he not?

A couple posts of mine and one of another member were removed due to crossing the line. A member reported them and action was taken. Sorry for the disturbance.

                            Mark,
Just trying to get thru the day without cutting off any more body parts. Maybe I'll try to cut a circle on my new saw.

                            No harm, no foul.

                            Thanks

I'm pretty sure i'll never need a circle badly enough to do it that way, but if i was running 13 to 15 amps into a cast iron saw through a light switch attached with wire nuts--the circle thing might seem safe!!
