    Just VENTING

Anybody recall the scene from the Movie “O Brother Where Art Thou?” –

Pomade Vendor: I can get the part from Bristol. It'll take two weeks, here's your pomade.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Two weeks? That don't do me no good.
Pomade Vendor: Nearest Ford auto man's Bristol.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Hold on, I don't want this pomade. I want Dapper Dan.
Pomade Vendor: I don't carry Dapper Dan, I carry Fop.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well, I don't want Fop, god**** it! I'm a Dapper Dan man!
Pomade Vendor: Watch your language, young feller, this is a public market. Now if you want Dapper Dan, I can order it for you, have it in a couple of weeks.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well, ain't this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere!

I fee that way living in Georgetown Texas – Example: went looking for Hard Board – finished on both sides – Fruitless endeavor, no one carries it! – I will have to comb the Austin suppliers ;-(

That sounds about the way I feel ordering certain computer parts here in Franklin, TX.

      Why is it always Texas,
I once broke down in Waco, spent 2 weeks waiting for a part for my motorcycle.
      Again, TWO WEEKS

Ah yes, the joys of country life. We live about 45 miles from Reno, so the package delivery service folks are frequent visitors at our house.

OTOH, I had a critical airplane part fail on takeoff from Claxton, GA (the fruitcake capital of the world, I kid you not). My initial impresson of the local airframe and powerplant mechanic was that of a stereotypical shade tree mechanic, but he had a replacement part delivered the next morning and we were in New York by late afternoon. Much to my amazement, the bill was very reasonable.

Ah yes, the joys of country life.

TWO WEEKS! In Oz it's more like 4 weeks

I get "stuff" shipped from the US faster than that - usually about 7 working days (USPS International)

BTW - Sears are VERY anxious to tell me they can now ship to OZ.

RodKirby - don't you all have the metric week? ( 1 week = 10 days)

We have the same problem in Hawaii!!! Need to really plan your projects far in advance so U can have all the materials/hardware to finish the project. Not to mention the additional cost of shipping $$$$$.

Rod, About a month ago I ordered a fan for a computer system used for GIS. This fan is proprietary to the motherboard of the computer and the only place it's made is in Hong Kong.
1 day after I ordered it it was 30 miles outside HK at the international shipping facility in Shenzhen, China Peoples Republic,
2 days later it was at the international shipping facility in Los Angeles, California.

And..... that's where it sits. I guess Homeland Security considers it a threat to national security or something.

Well, the folks at homeland security probably are afraid that the malicious code built into the fan motor will travel up the copper power wires towards the heatsink, jump through the heatsink and into the CPU. From there it will no doubt take over our banking system and government (well, that could be an improvement over what we have).

Not for nothing, but it seems like every company in the US is doing JITO just in time ordering... Nothing in stock, but I can have it in xxx days. Drugs in stock? Next day for many items, auto parts, same day or next day - anyone else notice this lately?

most everybody is buying based upon price, not delivery. Sure, we want it fast, but we're not willing to pay for it.

Local suppliers of hardware items do their best to keep in stock mainflow bulk packaging, such as drawer slides, hinges, etc. I'm seeing less and less of walk up traffic, buying onsey twosey.

Guess we are paying the price for cheap. That being said - I would rather pay extra $10 for the Bosh Router I ordered on line, to be able to walk out of a store with it the same day - I am probably the exception not the rule.

                            Brings to mind the adage:

Quality, fast, and cheap: you can get two, but never all three at the same time.
